I have changed my mind, we should join the Euro on one condition. They adopt English as their first and only language! ;)

Just to Balance things up.... why we should join the Euro...

Great post mate, really informative and totally agree.

And this:

Yes.

Should have been done when it was first started, when we would have had the biggest influence on strategy and what would be best for us. Now we'd probably get screwed.

A government that has no backbone, a conservative party worse, and the "I dont want the euro because I like the pound brigade", pretty much sums up what this country is. Crap.

Right, in a nutshell why shouldn't we adopt the Euro? I'm not bothered about drivel reasons such as identity (I know who I am, I don't need a coin to reinforce this). If it helps our economy what's so bad about it?

To be honest the case needs to be made to adopt the Euro and not the other way round. If the disadvantages are not outweighed by the advantages then why change? One of the problems I have with posts like pneumonic's is that there is no mention at all of any of the disadvantages of joining the Euro (not to mention the accusations of xenophobia if you don't agree).

What I want before I vote yes is a valid unbiased discussion of the pros and cons of joining the Euro. But instead we will have partisan "debate" with each side presenting itself as having only positives.

Post was a combination of things I found not my actual opinion :)

I am still undecided as it were... but what I do think we need is some proper discussion and arguments presented to us Joe Public..

Ditto. It just struck me as the normal pro-euro argument in that it didn't even mention any of the disadvantages or possible disadvantages. Sadly the chance of getting a proper discussion and debate with both our press and our parliament is slim to non-existant.

Whilst the GBP is the world's third largest reserve currency, the increased budget deficit combined with the poor economic outlook for the economy as a whole puts us in a very weak position. The GBP currently makes up 4.7% of world currency reserves, with the USD at 63.9% and the EUR at 26.5%. Whilst the UK is still a major world economy, we are no longer a superpower, and thus do not command the same level of influence over the world economy we once did, nor is there the confidence in our economy and the value of the pound as there is with the USD. This makes "digging our way out of a recession" a lot more difficult. Joining the Euro not only makes the Eurozone stronger, it increases our sphere of influence considerably. As part of the Eurozone, we become an economic superpower once again.

:o copied and pasted from SC :o

we should withdraw from europe and just keep free trade.

But either way sitting on the fence is not doing us any good. We either need to 100% join Europe and influence it or totally withdraw.

I assume you don't mean we should leave the Council of Europe? If so, why?

oh yes, hell yes.

The laws they pass go against ours and don't help us. Human rights for criminals for example.
There decisions on food have killed are farming and wrecked our selection.

Basically everything about it is rubbish.

So you propose a Parliamentary 'British Human Rights Act' instead which has the same intentions but removes the need to go against "British wellbeing"?

no, never ever ever ever.

the pound is like st georges cross it represents us. how so many countries just gave up their currencies so quickly i will never understand.

That's why they are all laughing at you all now, "poor" old George, silly old beggar. :p

Human rights for criminals isn't a law that goes against ours, if you don't allow human rights for people you don't like then you might as well not bother with any human rights at all. Before someone says it, no, this would not be a good idea, we've spent a very long time trying to make it to the point where all people actually have rights, let's not throw that away for the sake of an ill-advised point scoring contest.

Farming policy is more arguable but we've got to look to specifics to see whether it is mostly beneficial or not. I don't know the answer to that one.

Ok not against our laws and I agree that criminals can't be left out. but human rights have gone far to far..

As for farming only allowed to grow certain species and has to be x-length or size, cheese has to be pasteurised and 101 other things. Has not helped us at all.

Also i'm not sure how it's worked in other countries. but I can't see prices coming into line with that of mainland Europe, if we joined the euro. That would mean that It wiould still be expensive for Europe to buy of us, but unlike now it would make it more expensive for us to import as well.
