GTA4 PC Vs PS3

I'm not sure where the 'by far' bit comes from; the PS3 and 360 versions are fairly similar. The 360 is the somewhat superior version, but there's nothing to significantly detract from the PS3 version.

A bit higher fps, 33iirc instead of 31 avg. , expansions coming for the 360 alone...

Does it tell you the settings the consoles run on in the readme? Can't seem to find it.

took me awhile to find it ( this is while I hate official threads, impossible to find info without reading it all) :

THE GRAPHIC SETTINGS OF GRAND THEFT AUTO IV PC

Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available.

Graphics settings are limited by system resources by default. 256MB video cards force minimum settings by default. If a user bypasses these safety measures using command line arguments and exceeds their system resources, the users gaming experience may be compromised.

Video Mode
Resolution scaling effects water, reflections, shadows, mirrors and the visible viewable distance. The resolution settings relate to the amount of available video memory. At 2560*1600 the game will require 320MB of video memory in addition to all the memory required for content. At 800*600 the game will require 32MB of video memory in addition to the content. Medium resolution settings are recommended for most users as higher settings are only usable if there is available video memory.

Texture Quality
Texture quality affects the visual quality of the content of the game. High setting for textures will require 600MB of video memory at a setting of 21 View Distance in addition to the memory taken by the Video Mode. A medium texture setting is recommended for most users.

Render Quality
Render quality is the texture filter quality used on most things in the world rendering. Most people would know this as anisotropic filtering. Medium settings are recommended for most users and will provide filtering beyond what the console versions can execute.

View Distance
View distance scales the distance in which different objects in the world such as building and cars are seen. Raising this option increases the distance in which high quality objects must be loaded and will increase the memory it requires. Restrictions are established to ensure the game runs optimally for most users. A setting of 22 or more will provide PC users an enhanced experience over the console versions.
Detail Distance
Detail distance scales aspects of the environment that the View Distance setting does not including vegetation, trash and other moveable objects. A setting of 10 would be the equivalent to the performance on a console. This setting has little effect on memory.

Vehicle Density
Vehicle density scales the traffic density of the traffic in the game. It has no effect on the mission vehicles or difficultly of the game, but can have a significant impact on CPU performance

Shadow Density
Shadow Density controls the number of shadows generated for positional lights in exterior environments. These shadows are exclusive to the PC version and can have a major impact on CPU and GPU performance.

Crossfire/SLI
With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2)
SLI is currently unsupported. Support will be added through a future game patch as well as an updated Nvidia driver.

NOTE: Background Processes
Certain background processes can have a detrimental effect on system performance when playing GTA IV, especially on systems with minimum required system memory. Users should ensure they disable their Virus scans (especially “on-access” type scans) when running the game to maximize performance.

I have it on pc,and its awesome, the multiplayer is so much fun. As for the controls i played other gta games on console and i found the controls much easier on mouse and keyboard. Esspecily the shooting missions. With the new cover system gta4 has i imagen its quite fiddly on console controls unless it has a auto aim or lock on thing.

I like the fact you can control your camera with the mouse while driving, however i find the mini games and flying chopers a lot easier on control pad, but its so easy to switch between the 2 in game.

As for the graphics i think they are good and after awhile you dont notice the lack of aa.
Word of warning though u might be a tad limited with your graphics settings with only 512mb of video ram.

I had it for the PS3 and played about halfhour then sold it due to blury mess, was waiting for PC version thinking great but then i read all the issues with PC version performance wise so did not bother.

They don't compared to people with Duals.

With my spec in Sig, I get 49fps on the benchmark and it runs fluent in game. My mate who runs an E8400 and a 4850 said he got about 30fps and the game was choppy :/

I've read plenty of people with quads getting crap performance though.

Does anyone actually have the PS3 version?

I do and its sickening. It lags so badly and doesn't even run at 720p making it so blurry. I actually stopped playing as its too hard to see anything.

Get it on PC with your spec. Main thing it needs is a quad, which you have.
This. Had it on the PS3 in the summer and agree it looks terrible. The blur filters are really bad to hide the lack of Vram. Completed it then bought the PC version. Anyone who thinks the console versions are better needs an eyesight test as it looks horrible as the consoles just cannot handle the game engine and the draw distance is pathetic. PC with Low detail is the equivalent of the console versions according to R* and they should know. So if you can get it running at medium or higher it will look a lot better. Most of the people moaning about bad performance either have a low spec rig or fail to tweak the game so it runs smoothly. Wish I had the time to post some screenshots of the PC version as it looks absolutely stunning especially when the sunset kicks into the weather pattern.

What is thea actual game like because that is what i mainly care about?

Not that great imo, the missions are all nearly identical, go here, shoot this person then possibly chase them for a while. There are a few gems (four leaf clover) but they're the exception to the rule. Also, the whole buddy system is a joke, if you actually paid as much attention to your pals as they wanted you would never actually do any missions as you'll be sat in a strip club with Roman 23 hours of the day.

While not a gameplay problem, this really annoyed me; The main character has no development whatsoever. He goes on and on about wanting to change and stop being violent, which is great, but you can then run outside and shoot a fat chick in the face. It just doesn't work.

Doesnt sound that bad lol

I might wait until it comes out cheap somewhere and then get it. Would it be worth it if it was only £20 or something?

Yes, this is one of the things that bugged me about the game. He acts like he has a conscious and he doesnt like killing, yet he goes around killing people for money.

My rig is a Q6600 at 3.2GHz, 4GB RAM, and a 4870 512MB.

Hi mate,

Other than I have the 1gb 4870 that is exactly my spec. Runs with no problems on the PC and the graphics are miles better than the PS3. People seem to forget that the game runs and looks crap on the PS3/360 too!

The vast majority of the people moaning about this game are on dual core. It runs quite well on a quad as long as you back the draw distance down. I run at 1900x1080 on a 46" TV and I promise you it knocks spots off anything the PS3 could do.
