BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Congratulations to Mr Hoy, an exceptional year so far and a fully deserved award. Quite a few people wrong-footed in their predictions here including myself to an extent, I wasn't sure that Hoy would be popular enough to win it.

;) I did not take you statement that you had..... ;)

Finally. Someone understands me :D

;) I agree about that, but I am hoping it is in a positive way, Cycling in the past has not had a lot of funding, so any good publicity on the BBC is good.... hopefully someone will inject much needed cash into the sport, or for that matter anyother Olympic sport.

I agree. British cycling has momentum. Its important this is kept going. Too many times in the past, we have had success, then taken it for granted, stood back, and watched everyone go past us.

I'd have been inclined to give it to Adlington, on the basis that the points against Hamilton of having a lot of money to back him also kind of apply to Hoy too. GB cycling gets a decent wedge of cash too, whereas our swimming is still (I believe) pretty underfunded, and Adlington had to push up the hard way.

That said, when it comes down to it, the top three are all pretty worthy imo.

Did anyone else think it was a bit strange how Hamilton, Hoy and Adlington all had radio mics already attached to their clothing? I only caught the last 5 minutes of the show so I couldn't see whether or not the other people that were nominated had them as well, but it just stuck in my head.

"Public voting, but these 3 people have radio mics ready"... hmm?

Some people in this thread have an unwholesome infatuation with Lewis Hamilton - geez give it a rest already!

Soooooooo pleased Hoy deservedly won it and here's to all those athletes out there training hard for 2012 while doing 9 to 5s and then some..

I think that British cycling needed the recognition as its one of the sports we are good at and have spent a lot of money to establish ourselves on the world scene (just like rowing). The team award concretes that and shows other disciplines that better organisation and money can bear fruit and its a good hope that if they do get their act together in 2012 we can get more medals in different sports.

So glad Chris Hoy won, he may not have had another chance - he is 32. Lewis will win it eventually, just too many good Olympians this year (P.S I know the Olympics is only 2 weeks long, but these guys spend the lion share of 3/4 years preparing for it - its win or bust - their dedication shouldnt EVER be questioned)...

ps3ud0

Well done Chris Hoy. I'll admit I voted for him :)

He's built like a machine. Imagine being kicked in the nads by him :O

Perhaps BBC just knew who the top 3 were and gave them mikes as all of them would be going up?

Well done to Hoy though. Haven't really seen him in interviews but he seemed like a genuine bloke who deserves this award. :)

You have never watched the tour have you???????!!! It is a team sport. Armstrong would never had won that many tours if it wasnt for his team.

What has the tour got to do with the olympics? I may have used cycling as a general term, but its clear we are talking about the olympic cycling. Plus, Armstrongs buddies get paid for helping him.

None of the individual medals in the velodrome were affected/helped by other members of the GB team. That was my point.

They deserve all the accolades they get, but they were not a "team" in that sense of the word. If you give the prize to the pursuit team, thats fine. Each one of that teams actions, directly affected the result. To give it to the whole group of GB Cyclists was wrong, IMO.

I believe one of the other nominees was the British Olympic Team. Why? They are also not a "team" in that sense of the word.

Not the same thing at all in this case.

Armstrong did not need any of his team members really..... okay he has guys fetching water bottles and food, they also shield him from the wind and they generally did what he told them to do...... but at the end of the day Armstrong had to peddle up those mountains and get the TT times to win.

Didn't voting end 10-15 minutes before the award? Plenty of time to attach a mic to 3 people. Or just stick a mic on each of the 10 candidates from the start? I know at least Hamilton was interviewed during the show, so he would have had one anyway. (don't know if Hoy or Adlington were).

Not strange at all really.

Best man won - well worth it, although I would have liked Ben Ainslie to get in the top three also due to his brilliant Olympic Record also (3 golds and a silver in the last 4 Olympics)

I also think its wrong to award the team award to people participating in seperate events, the cyclists did very well indeed no doubt but they where never ontrack all at the same time relying on one another - like a rugby or football team, and if one of them failed to get a medal then there was no hindrance to the "team"

Im sure Lewis and Rebecca will win it in years to come

I was a little confused as to why Phil Neville was in the group behind Sir Bobby Charlton when he accepted his lifetime award - he left Utd along time ago and was never that great a footballer, and stuck out like a sore thumb given that he was the only current player in the group (that I saw anyway) standing up there

Possibly because the current squad is off to Japan, and people like Beckham are unavailable.

I'm sure he wasn't first choice, but the closest thing they could get to a current United player, but they could have either done without or got someone like Bryan Robson or Mark Hughes to stand in.

What I was meaning is that it was un-necessary for a lifetime award to have any current players behind him - let alone an Everton player (even if his brother is still part of the Utd setup)

Im sure they could have got Ole there, he wouldnt have stuck out like a sore thumb as much (even if he doesnt play currently)

Better to have nobody than someone from another team

I would also like to add that Hoy and Wiggins could well retire before 2012, so it was right one of those won , LH or RA should have years ahead of them to win more medals/championships (and of course LH has two or four times as many chances as RA to be the "winner" in their sport)
