Just put a deposit down on a New car!

Thats a very good point, after 4 years this is going to be a car with over 100,000 miles on it. How much would a 4 year old 100k Fiesta be worth? Somewhat less than £13,000 I guess?

Enough less to completely cancel out the economy savings of suffering a diesel supermini for 2-3 hours a day?

Don't get me wrong, I like the new Fiesta. It's a great car. But it's a great town car, not a great Motorway munching car.

I predict its value at that 4years/100k to be at around £2500, £220 per month in depreciation.

I can sort of understand the appeal of something slow and boring, it's an excellent licence preserver if nothing else, but there must be some serious fudge factors in your mileage calculations of you think this is going to save you money over buying, say, a 1 or 2 year old car.

I can't get my head round this...
You wanted "something ultra reliable and cost efficient for getting to work and back" so you put a deposit on a brand new fiesta? Is the reliability even guaranteed? How far do you drive to work every morning? Edit: Ok... 100 miles... Worth it?

There is a serious flaw somewhere.

No unexpected breakdowns
Being new doesn't guarantee this at all?

Fixed costs!!

Because £220 every month in depreciation is fixed, whereas not knowing if it'll cost you £100 this month in breakdowns is bad.

I dont know the ins and outs of motors, but I know that if I was doing that mileage i would much prefer a nice comfy motor, which has a bit of grunt left in it when its doing 70.

My total lack of knowledge would have me buying something like an Octavia Vrs :).. sure they do decent mpg

Just want to add that I bought a brand-new Fiesta back in 2000 - probably not the wisest of purchases but I don't regret it - it worked for me. Only had my first breakdown this autumn in it, and up until last year it has been very cheap to run. I can certainly see the appeal of a brand-new car, sure he could get a decent second hand saloon for that money, but what if he only wants a super-mini?

That said, I'm hoping to upgrade next year and that will be a second-hand purchase :p

... Seemed like a good idea at the time ? Now to find out if that deposit is refundable!

Guys, guys you're all forgetting that it can outpace a Corvette round a shopping centre so with that in mind it's a bargain!

Good buy Bug One.

Why are you all complaining? We need people who dont need to buy new cars to buy them to keep the economy going. He didn't come and ask for advice, in which case your sage passive/aggressive responses would be welcomed.

Well done for keeping another Ford dealer going this month I say.
