What is your favourite marque?

Especially Firestar. The money you've thrown at barrying up that Passat could have landed you a decent car made by your favourite marque, for example.

It is indeed an interesting question and i understand why its asked : Passat was 3.6k ish and i've spent around 2k on it so 5.6k in total, its better than it was before, if its 2k better is a matter of argument and personal opinion really, regardless of which car i purchase i'd pour money into it and 'barry it up' with mods such as brakes / wheels and suspension.

Its been more of a mess about in the fact its my first turbo engine so i wanted something that was cheap to buy and i could mess about with take apart and figure things out and learn after doing the supercharged mazda, wanted a 1.8t lump due to this but didn't want to pay more to have less space and a 1.8T engine in a Golf for example.

Not a wise choice many will say but the car looks alright, doesn't look like a barry boy motor in the slightest, performs better, cornering isn't fantastic due to the weight of the thing and the normal dead VW steering feel but it doesn't roll and now has a fair amount of mechanical grip.

My next car will indeed be something from my above list but my original intention was to buy something cheaper than i already had so i could save some money, didn't really work out as intended due to my mechanical nature of wanting to play with everything.

When it comes time to sell i've got most of the OEM bits so will take stuff like the brakes / wheels off and simply replace them with the standard ones, well thats the plan at some point anyways.

Obviously its the better car, but much better, i'm not sure, for most people i fear not. IMO only in power and noise terms is it better, which is a given for any of the AMG models in the range. Its also a harder ride which goes against the mercedes-benz ethos for me.

Dont get me wrong, stunning cars, but i think anyone expecting a sports car would be gravely disappointed. :)

Have you had the chance to drive the AMG S Class yet? I think you should as it's not only the performance, it has a massive sense of occasion about it that makes a normal S Class feel almost bland and boring.

Yeah, my comments stand. I love their styling, but for me there is no point to them at all. The extra power is simply not necessary other than for showing off or having a very occasional foot to the floor moment, and the rest of the package is wasted in the huge heavy S-class body. Its undeniably the best in the range, but my point is that for me the S500 is just as good with much lower costs.

For those of you who don't own a car produced by your favourite marque - why?

Especially Firestar. The money you've thrown at barrying up that Passat could have landed you a decent car made by your favourite marque, for example.

I do..it just has a SEAT bodyshell :p

Stuff like mortgages and life got in the way of me purchasing my perfect motor, but I will, one day. Plus its nice to dream.

I had a version of my ideal car from almost my ideal Marque but it died, now I just need to convince her indoors that we need to get a garage and a classic mini so I can relive the dream.

Porsche every single time

I fell in love with the marque as a schoolboy following the then newly released 959 and its rallying exploits - I still think its one of the most sexiest cars in existance

My love affair was complete when I HAD to ride to work wirh my boss for a whole year in his 944 turbo (and got frightened off by the cost of the tyres and servicing etc lol)

In another direction the old "Colin McRea" Subaru WRX was also a lovely car - pity the current ones look like elaborate mini metro's

Even though 90% of their cars look the same and have done so for god knows how many years?

Yet still they sell I wonder why that is? Oh let me guess, because people just want the badge, yes, that'll be the reason. My advice is go drive a few and then take a view. Looks are a subjective call but how they peddle is pretty special and they do so without the normal 'hassle' one associates with a sports car and with a 911 you can stick youngsters in the back and take it to the shops or around town without the temp gauge going off the scale or the clutch breaking your leg.

audi - its the new bmw. Better styling, perfomance, build. amazing cars

Not sure I would go with that myself, but it is a subjective call.

I was looking at getting out of my RS4 so went to Audi, assuming they wold give me the best deal. I did not want to spend big, so R8 and RS6 were not really on the radar so was looking at similar or cheaper. Fact is I could not find another car in their range that appealed to me. Q7 nope, A5 nope, A4 nope, A6 nope, A8 nope and RS3 nope, I'd miss the RS4 good though that car is. Do the same at BMW and I concluded 135i maybe, 5 series yes, X5 yes, X6 maybe, Z4 Coupe maybe. BMW still makes cars that drive much better than their Audi equivelent and though Audi make a well styled and appointed car I really think of late their interior quality is not what it was.

They need to make them drive as well as BMW before then can claim to have surpassed them and today I think they are still someway off.

Land Rover.

Always loved them since I was tiny, just thought it was really cool they were the best cars off road, and I thought they looked nice and rugged.

You need to drive a few newer Audi's I think :)

lolzlzolzolz

I have two members of close family who work for audi, one a salesman - the other a technician. I have driven lots of audis :) In all fairness less bmw's. I know you drive an older bmw but there is no need to defend them at every opp :)

At the risk of sounding like a clone of Jez, it is Porsche and Mercedes for me. Having owned a 986, CL500, TT and 330, I'm in a position to judge most of the premium German marques. Nothing comes close to Mercedes for luxury until you get up to Bentley/Rolls levels in my opinion and the Porsche is an amazingly reliable and easy to use car for its performance levels. I guess my opinion is backed up by the fact that an SL500 anbd 996 are my current considerations for the replacement of the Boxster. Just have to decide if I want the driving thrill of the Carrera or the grace and smoothness of the Merc.

Other marques I have a soft spot for, but have no real experience are some of the Italian firms, principally Alfa and Maseratti. I think both make beautiful cars and to me they have a bit of soul about them. I probably wouldn't go backwards to an Alfa now but the Maseratti is a contender but I don't think I could live with it being so tempremental. This is why Porsche are so great - all the style and performance without the hassle.

I also admire Subaru for producing well engineered, reliable, quick and affordable cars. I'd never get one but I can really appreciate what they do for the market they appeal to.

Older german barges are better than the newer ones. My dads 320 cdi advantagre is nothing special. think the older ones apparently were better.

I wouldn't go that far. Still nice cars though, but Most audis are 4 pots and front wheel drive, BMW are mostly 6 pots and RWD. This is where Audi have got it wrong. Still nice cars though.
