What is your favourite marque?

Would be good if people could write a short note about why their favourite is the favourite. Gobbo, thats pretty much what i was meaning with my bit about porsche, and is why they are a brand i will always favour.

Sorry. I was in a rush to get home so had to leave work.

Ford.

Because these days they seem to be producing very good cars, which are good looking, have a good range of engines, fairly good interiors, good handling, cheap repairs and all of this done for a lot less than the rivals. This value for money, to me, is very impressive!

But I would have said this.

Plus the create such fun cars as the Focus ST/RS etc.

As for everyday cars it depends on what I need, for average usage I would say I prefer Mercedes. I can see myself owning an E Class, if I'm doing better then hopefully an AMG :D They are expensive but so nice, precision firm sporty driving dynamics aren't the highest thing on my wants from a car, but is more than welcome.

My ABSOLUTE favourite Marque above all? Corvette. Loved them since I was a kid, had the toys, every driving game I had I chose a corvette to drive (even running in the garden going beep beep! "I'm a corvette!" etc.) Current goal is to own a Corvette Z06 within 5 years, one of my dreams, yet with them not having supercar pricing, is so achievable. Fantastic cars I'm sure you'll agree. :)

BMW - just always loved them, I have enjoyed all the ones I have been in. I like the dealers and the service that you get.
I want an X5 :]

Porsche - affordable day to day great sports cars. I adore the Cayman.
I like that the designers are lazy, the look of the 911 and the rest are great, they only need small adjustments, not full redesigns

but I really think the SL55 is a markedly different beast to the SL500 in enough areas to disagree with that statement. Without going down the technical differences, the exhaust note alone would never, ever disappoint :)

Obviously its the better car, but much better, i'm not sure, for most people i fear not. IMO only in power and noise terms is it better, which is a given for any of the AMG models in the range. Its also a harder ride which goes against the mercedes-benz ethos for me.

Dont get me wrong, stunning cars, but i think anyone expecting a sports car would be gravely disappointed. :)

Well its going to have to be BMW since I own one, but will admit that the image associated with them is hideous as are the twunts who buy them simply to 'have something flash'. The cars are also considerably uglier since Bangle got his grubby mitts into the design process.

I do like Honda as well, because of their reliability excellence at low prices and even though I've never owned one, I do like the fact that they're prepared to be bold and innovative with some of their ideas. For example:-

1. The bold design of the Civic (even if the interior is gash).
2. The single 'one movement' lever used to fold the rear seats on the Civic and Jazz.
3. The fantastic multi-flip rear seat arrangement in the Civic which allows you to flip away the seat bases.
4. The powered tailgate on the Accord Estate (even though the mechanism tends to malfunction).
5. Vtec yo! (even though a BMW six knocks it for, well...six!)
6. The amount of R&D which they've put into hydrogen cell development.
7. Producing a back to basics 'break the mould' roadster just to celebrate someone's birthday (S2000) and which isn't girly.
8. Having the balls to produce the NSX during an era dominated by Ferarris and 911s.
9. The fact that the components they tend to use are engineered par excellence and last longer than those in other mainstream manufacturers.
10. Not producing a diesel engine until they were ready to produce a GOOD diesel engine that didn't cover everyone in soot or blow up at 100k.

Third place goes to Audi because of the quality of the materials that they use for their interiors and the way that they make you feel like you've bought an expensive, quality piece of kit, compared to the opposition.

MGR of course.

Since being 11 or 12 I have always liked them, esp the older ones like the SD1 and the 800 Vitty, so only natural I should have one.

I drove a Fiesta for a year (pretty much) and it was poo. Endless clutch problems, slow as sin and unreliable as hell.

I will probably always drive British, although now having a derv I do miss driving something with a K series engine in. Gone but never forgotten :(

Although I do like BWMs admittedly :D

I agree with this, very good value for money cars much better than they need to be.

Honda / Toyota

Things just don't seem to go wrong and in recent years they've had some decent options for the money in the used market. Not so sure for the future when it comes to my next car purchase though.

Part of me likes the idea of a BMW 3/5-series but it'd really frustrate me with the expensive niggles. To me a BMW with a 6 cylinder engine is kind of like Andrex toilet roll, its very nice when using it but that level of comfort is maybe just not neccessary :p I can see how they appeal to many though.

I would agree with Toyota/honda, excellently engineered cars, but they miss bits out :/

Lotus
Aston

Not likely to want much else in my life time either!

I just hope these two don't succumb to this recession over the next 3 to 5 years.

Without wanting to derail your thread any further, I still don't really agree. The engine is obviously a massive difference, not only in sound and power but driveabilty as well. Much bigger brakes, better seats, better damping (and although after driving each back to back I would say the SL500 is slightly more compliant, at a steady pace the SL55 is still a very calming and gentle place to be), button gear change, externally more aesthetically pleasing, tighter chassis, higher redline etc. Personally, *and that is what it may boil down to*, lightly pushing an SL500 compared to an SL55 is, imho, a very difference experience and far more pleasurable in the AMG.

I swear the steering is totally different as well, far sharper than the SL500 but that may be in my head. It's a very difficult car to pigeon-hole, an interesting sports car / GT hybrid.

Back on track, I would go with Subaru as a favourite marque along with BMW and Rover for sentimental reasons. It's also hard to argue against Porsche.

Volvo, wanted one as long as i remember and really enjoyed the year i had mine, having second thoughts about buying another incase it doesent live up to the last one.

My old man has always wanted a brand spanking new BMW 5 series altough he can easily afford one he has never bought one which has supprised me. Driving his last few cars (51 Passat, 55 Merc C160 coupe, 56 Audi A6, 57 Audi A3, 58 Lexus IS220d) none of impressed me.

Corvette. Had such a soft spot for them since I was about 10, and will hopefully be in a position in ~3 years when I will finally have a Corvette C5 to call my own :D
Other than that though, it has to be Mercedes. My appreciation for them probably doesn't make much logical sense, but I got into an old C Class taxi on holiday in Greece and glanced at the mileage. 973000KM. Weird I know, but from that moment I really did like them a lot. They just seem to have so much more "class" than any other marque to me. Will hopefully own a mint 190E in a few years too :)
Common sense marque would be Ford. The definition of motoring bang for buck IMO.

I wish I could put a British manufacturer here but realistically I have to say Alfa Romeo.

They are probably the worst for reliability but it was either that or Lancia, but as Lancia don't make anything of significance anymore like Delta Evo it's a no brainer. I like and will probably always buy German cars like BMW, VW or maybe even the odd Japanese one like a MX-5 for their reliability but they all have no heart or passion as marques in my eyes :(

Subaru for their awesome flat-4s.

TVR for being absolute head-mentals and concentrating solely on making a car an experience, and to hell with the sensible stuff like running costs and reliability.
