Since i've built my quad core system i've had nothing but problems with it. So i rebuilt it all again and omitted 2 hard drives from the system and reinstalled Vista HP 64bit, all was fine for a week or two but all of a sudden, i keep getting random firefox crashes, HL2 shuts down randomly and worse, i'm getting a good few BSOD's and don't know why. I've just had one and restarted and copied the following details from 'windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown'...

Any ideas?

I go by feel rather than codes so here are my Guesses baring in mind I run a 2nd hand Quad/Crossfire set up bought from a member.

Everybody told me it would be a Finnicky rig before I got it but I had to have the Tech :p
Basically if you think getting a system to run everything stable on a single or a Dual is hard/Awkward then try a Quad.
Start with all that auto guff in Bios & switch it all off, Full control is needed.
Give us your Full spec for as I'd suspect lack of volts for starters.
After that it would be your Ram, Please don't tell me it's Crucial Ballistix.
After that I would suspect your Temps & your Tim/Cooler/Mating surfaces.
Then I would suspect your Overall Ambient temps.
After that I would Suspect User error.

I have been polite here & changed the order I suspect things to be friendly :D

Ok, my setup is as follows..

Asus P5Q Pro
Q6600
4gb Geil Black Dragon (2x2gb)
Asus HD4850
1x320 Sata 2 HD
and 1 (unconnected now) SATA2 160gb
PSU is Thermaltake TR2 500w.
All encased in thermaltake soprano case.

Heres what CPU Z says...

TBH, i've hardly been into the bios and i've certainly not changed anything in there, i've lost touch with the current way of things, but i'm not scared to go in there and do what i need to do given instructions :D

This is a real quick one & I am tired so bare with me.
If your Bios is at Default then ten to one the Cool & Quiet feature will be turned on, May not be called Cool & Quiet on your Mobo but I am sure you know the feature. Get in there & turn it off it's pants & causes all sorts of drop offs/outs.

Next.
Those temps look High for this time of year & at Idle, Worthless, Post Stressed temps please.

Next.
Ram @ default ? Would be where I would start if Temps, Hardware seemed ok, Others who Own that ram will know better but + .25 - + .50 may help stability. But Firstly I would run Memtest to elimate Ram errors.

Intermittent errors are nightmares but then you already know that.
All we can do is suggest things & hope we stumble across the problem or Bump the thread into the face of somebody who has Actual user experience of your hardware.
Basic process of elimination really & I will check the thread later to see how you get on.
Once the Clever ones get out there Fart sacks they will sort it ;)

Thanks for your help Malc, i will run memtest now.

Any other suggestions also welcome :)

Will post later when i get chance.

I've not ran memtest yet, i downloaded it and burned the iso to cdr and rebooted with dvd as 1st boot device and it's bypassed it so i've probably burned the iso wrong. I've also checked around my bios for something like cool n quiet but anything that could be similar was disabled, fan speed control etc, checked my voltages in bios and they are near on what they should be, i.e 5v is at 4.985v or something as close as.

I've also uninstalled EPU-6 in windows, which is what i imagine cool n quiet in bios would be (presets for performance and economy etc.) Come to think of it, it could have been around the time that i installed that that my probs started. I'll leave it run like this for now and then i'll try memtest again if i still have problems.

Isnt it called speedstep? Think thats what cool n quiet is known as.

Vista has a built in memtest in the control panel > admin tools.

Try removing 1 stick of ram for a while if all is ok, try the other.

Also try reinstalling SP1, can get it from the MS site the stand alone installer. I was getting a lot of BSOD all various things, reinstalled this and it seems to have been a lot better.

Also do a checkdisck on the HDD make sure no errors and so forth.

Try cleaning up the registry as well? Make sure you got all the latest drivers for everything also as this can be an issue.

What vid card do you have and do you have SP1 installed? Also what about mobo drivers are they all up to date?

I've got a feeling it's my HSF, bios temps are 60+ on the CPU, i'm going to have to re-seat the HSF with some new thermal paste.

Also, if it still crashes upload the associated minidump (listed in the error report). If it's a driver issue that will list what it is that caused it.

I've reseated the HSF with fresh paste and now temps are about 38 idle.

38 is Much more like it, Now it will be up around 50 - 60 when Loaded where it should be.
Only thing to do now is run it & see, Try not to change owt else for now as it's easy to get in a mess & solve the prob but create another. Just one step at a time does me.

Well i've been at work and just got in, my missus has been on the pc though and it hasn't bluescreened, but Firefox still keeps crashing, my temps are still being reported at 38 degrees, i'll see if HL2 crashes later on.

Just had a firefox crash, here's the crash report...
