Cloning an IDE drive to a SATA II Drive?

Hi Guys,

I've recently built a new system and went to town on the cable management (read drills and a dremel!)

I was using the HDDs from my old rig which were of course IDE. No matter how hard i tried i could NOT hide that bloody ribbon!

In the end i bought the following:
Samsung HD753LJ 750GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm *32MB Cache* - OEM

I think it'll format to about 650GB, so i'm going to make 1x 150GB partition for my boot and the rest will be where i install the games, music etc etc

Seeing as it'll completely replace the 80GB and 500GB IDE Drives, can i simply clone the 80GB boot IDE to the first partition of my SATA HDD and the 500GB to the second partition of my SATA?

Will it boot from the new SATA HDD after i take out the IDE drives?

Also, as a side note, does the partition help the seek times on a single HDD? Or would it be just as fast to use a single partition?

I have the full version of Acronis 11 btw.

Answers much appreciated :)

Yep

Use Acronis True image. Its what i did.

Btw install sata controller drivers on ** OS before u clone it. Otherwise it prob wont boot to windows.

Yep, as said above it'll work fine if you've got the drivers.

The partition won't make the seek times any faster though unfortunately.

Thanks guys, answers much appreciated :)

Are you sure about the partition not making a difference? I was always under the impression that making a boot and a 'storage' partition was good practice?

Well... thats what this forum is all about, you learn something new everyday

Thanks all ... i'll still make the partition just because have OCD and like everything to be organised lol
