Grand Theft Auto 4

This has to be the most bug ridden game I've ever purchased.

I'm realy ****ed off with rockstar, I still can't get the stupid game to run because of the Rockstar Social club screeny problem above.

I've googled high and low in search of some fixes.. none of which have worked

How can you charge people for something that doesn't work properly ffs :mad:

I can't get into GTA IV tonight.. it tries to update Rockstar Games Social Club and then tells me it needs to close it.. and it won't run the game!!

Steam :(

Have you attempted to verify the files via Steam yet? I couldn't get the game to load the other day for ages, did that then it all worked again.

It does take a fair amount of time, so make two cups of tea.

Ok, so got this today and i'm impressed so far. With no tinkering, the game ran well, and it can run in my native res (1680x1050) on low textures, but looks naf, so I reduced the res to a lower 16:10 one and increased textures and put draw distance to the max allowed. Now it plays well (20-38fps) ingame, and is very playable. I'm enjoying the missions so far too.

This is all with the spec in my sig. My CPU was originally at 2.66GHz and I benchmarked 35fps, and overclocking to 3Ghz saw a 1-2fps increase, not a lot. I'm thinking a new gfx would be good sometime in the new year, but for now, the game is running nicely. No crashes. There is some pop-in, but this is to be expected, esp with my low vid mem, plus it doesn't happen very often. I have all the lastest updates.

Thought i'd share one success story!

Whilst I think they could clearly optimise the game further for pc hardware my main complaints are the lack of AA support and some really blocky shadows that just don't look right.

Thanks, I just gave it a go but the problem is still there :(

Verify integrity of game cache is what I ran

Taken, have you removed and reinstalled the entire game and associated rubbish yet? It might be easier for now until rockastar have a fix for your issue, just so you can get playing again. Remember to revoke your activation though, and backup saves.

How do you revoke your activation for this game?

I had to format my computer tonight and I was 60% done on GTA 4 so I backed up my game from "Documents" and from "Local User" but when I start the game it just starts from the first mission :(

Any help?

I did the Revenger's Tragedy mission and got to the point where you fall off the chopper into the water and need to get into the boat to chase it - but as soon as I get behind the controls, a missile blows my boat up and me along with it. Not best pleased when it takes so long to get to that point in the mission!

You mean you actually managed to get IN the chopper and shoot the boat for a bit?

Why can't I do that :(

Did you copy your savegame folder on to another drive or DVD? You wiped your drive & reformatted it but not the same drive you backed up on ,lol ?

Sounds like a different mission - perhaps based on choices made earlier on?

When given the choice of 'Deal' or 'Revenge' I chose deal.

The mission I failed at just involved Nico running to a chopper himself during a cutscene, hanging on to the bottom of it for a few seconds then falling into the water. You are then told to get into a boat which is nearby. I do that and then boom, I'm dead before I have a chance to sail off.

Well mine was working perfectly yesterday and fingers crossed it will today. I'm just installing it on my laptop, can you use 2 pc's with the same disc at the same time? I've been trying to get a no-dvd thing, but haven't been able to get any working.

Only issue i can say I've seen is when you play normally it is fine, but when you go to a movie scene the fps shoots right down. Not that bad i guess, but it means that I've skipped quite a few of them because they don't play nice.

I ran fraps and noticed that the cutscenes (the widescreen ones only) are locked at 32fps. They are also blurrier than the rest of the game. The full screen cutscenes run at normal game speed and are sharper. Pretty weird.

Not sure if it applies to you steam buyers, but there is a shortcut in the GTAIV folder from my retail version that is titled 'revoke activation'.
