What company is next to go bust?

I love the way you call me an idiot and then go on to offer your own opinions which pretty much mirror what I've been getting at in this thread all along.

Last I checked it was you who wrote:

"and you are?"

or something trying to insinuate that I thought I was in more of a position to provide an opinion. This is the reason I called you an idiot.

Has anyone saying 'DSGi will be going bust' actually read this? Didn't think so ;)

You think that is positive? The group made an operating loss of £41m (previous year in profit), they acknowledge very volatile market conditions within the report. The also had a net debt of £141m at the end of H1 2008 (as opposed to £100m in the black last year). They apparently have £300m available from the banks, but this is not actual cash, this is effectively what they have left in their credit lines (ie they haven't exceeded their overdraft limit yet)

Remember this was all before the economics really started to bite into consumer spending.

I'm not saying it's horrific, or that they are obviously going down or anything like that, but the report you linked to, however well it was spun elsewhere, is not a glowing, positive report of health for the company.

you disregard other peoples opinion's but fail to offer reasons why WH Smiths are not going down the pan.

Despite what fox posted .Call me cynical but the figures that companies publish are usually to be taken with a pinch of salt.

in my area we have several WH SMiths, i have plenty of money to spend in their shops and go in every now and then and have never bought anything.

because they dont have stock / are far to expensive / dont have a wide range. This for me has happened for at least 5 years. If this happens for me i can be sure it happens for a whole load of people.

coupled with the fact that they are always empty (maybe except Post office customers), and have most of there prices beaten by other retail shops. Spells trouble.

yes, I still don't know why people are baning on about Smiths going under. Mindless morons.

To be totally honest, you can't argue about economic issues by saying "I do". As the absolute opposite is true for others (I use WH Smith daily). You have to argue in a more generic fashion. When we where discussing the closure of Woolies there was a common component by everyone who posted - they where jack of trades and masters of none.

WH Smith are different, their positioning in key locations is critical, airports, train stations are pure gold for them, they are the places you'll pay over the odds. Take a rational approach, where will most people start to reduce their shopping at? The answer is stores that sell moderately high priced goods, so DSG, Habitat (as I posted) and similar will get hit hard. People won't stop shopping at WH Smith's.

Think about it.

I don't doubt what your saying regarding what others do or dont do. I gave my opinion on what i see. I also suggested that others see them the same and if they do then eventually WHSMiths will suffer and i'm fairly sure they are now.

WH smiths I concede probably have the airports / train stations going for them, and maybe I underestimate the profits to be made from newagency. but the DVD sales / Games sales / Books sales must be suffering in a lot of retail areas.

LOL that is the worst attempt at spelling exaggerated I've ever seen :p I'm not even a spelling nazi :p

and tbh I don't really have a big ego on here, I just make a lot of sarcastic jokes and pretend to play up to the meat head stereo type but no one gets it.

If he's anything like me he would have studied late at night and do it all in secret while pretending to be a complete bum during the day. This is the optimal way to make people jealous. :D

I used to love ****** off people, especially the ones who'd make a huge fuss of studying so much and would then get a 70 while i got a 98 :D

This is the crappiest thread ever.

Not a single one of you are in any sort of position to make even a reasonable guess at which company is set to go next.

I know of several that are going in the next few weeks, however as they are traded on the stock exchange the information to which I am privy would fall under the scope of insider trading. In my job I have dealings with complex debt transactions, and have noticed a sharp increase in the last few weeks of loans moving from being performing assets to becoming impaired with losses. Once a company starts breaching its financial covenants, it is up to the banks as to whether we continue to lend or move towards putting the company in administration.

Generally speaking, the larger retailers with a sound business model will be safe as they have large revolving credit and capex facilities that were put in place well before this downturn and will be running nowhere near to their facility limits. We have not seen too much in the way of retail failures, property and associated services are finding themselves in serious trouble as the bottom falls out of the housing market.

So to summarise, just because some of us don't name names doesn't mean that we don't have names to name. :)

Why dont you give us the first letter of each company you know of. That way we wont know but when it does happen we can all say he was right!

I've not updated that for over 3 years, purely because I moved out of IT and into finance three years ago. I'd forgotten that I'd even put something in there.
