Grand Theft Auto 4

OK finally had a go at this today and suffice to say I'll stay with the console version, can't believe I'm saying this because I almost always prefer pc version.

I can run this at 2560x1600 no problem... was wondering why people were having trouble with this until i see how much graphics RAM this games uses. Seems people are simply running out of graphics memory, not the game being "badly coded" ...

I mean even 1GB VRAM isn't enough for high res and highest settings. I've got everything on full apart from textures, or i run out of graphics memory.

Mr.B, you have an uber system. It isn't just people who try to use settings which exceed their graphics RAM who have had performance problems.

This is strange, because i've been able to exceed my VRAM by almost 30% with little negative performance impact. Nobody seems to be able to really put their finger on why this game is poor performing for a lot of people, in fact, I wonder if R* themselves even know.

Well, I'll be back to playing this later, also have Fallout 3 to start playing soon, can't wait!

I sure hope R* sorts out all these issues people are having, as so far i'm finding it a very enjoyable game. The physics in particular set a new standard I think for PC games, coupled with a lot of the detail present in this game (e.g. bullet holes on cars, niko smashing windows, damage modelling.). None of these things are new, but the implementation is great and I think they work very well.

End Game

Well folks, finally completed the last mission early this afternoon having chosen the "Revenge" path. (Will have to try "Deal" on a replay). Probably about 75% complete as I couldn't be bothered to mop up all the side missions so late in the game.

Strange feeling having finished this one, not really the sense of fulfilment on cracking the last mission in SA. Very low key ending for Niko with the loss he has suffered and I guess the "Deal" alternative won't be much better. Did not leave me feeling very upbeat or triumphant.

The final mission was more tedious than particularly difficult, though it took about 4 attempts largely due to my own silly mistakes.

So...overall I have enjoyed GTA IV, DRM/GTA SC/Win Live notwithstanding. Not really encountered any crashes or serious bugs and I can live with the less than perfect graphics. San Andreas was always going to be a hard act for Rockstar to follow and I think maybe after the fairly sameish missions and scenery throughout IV they need to sit down and have a long think about what direction the franchise goes in next. If the more down to Earth less fantastical (i.e. no jetpacks or Alien Goo - or even Learjets) of IV world was one of those steps, unfortunately it created at times a very mundane world in which to spend a gaming month. I'm not saying the next GTA should be set in Space or something but a fresh approach and not necessarily the IV one might IMHO be an idea.

Anyhow, guess I will put it on the shelf for a couple of months and catch up on X3 or FC2 before having a re-play.

Its annoying me that I can't play in 1920*1200, is there anything I can do to get to this res? Its running at 1680*1050 at the mo and won't let me go higher, its only showing as 512mb of V-RAM, is there anyway to get it to use/see all 1gb of the RAM on my X2 card?

Just put the new Nvidia Drivers on, btw.

Cheers

Dave

Make a txt file in the main game dir called commandline.txt
Write these lines in the txt file

-norestriction
-novblank
-noprecache
-nomemrestrict

I beleive the last one is the important one for you.

GTAIV R* benched my Quad @ 3.7GHz, gfx max everything except ‘textures’ set to medium, and view distance was adjusted accordingly to stay within gfx card memory limitations. At the following res results are as follows:

-1024x768 = 59.89fps
-1280x1024 = 56.28fps
-1440x900 = 54.67fps
-1600x1200 = 46.47fps
-1680x1050 = 46.38fps
-1920x1200 = 40.16fps
-1920x1440 = 35.89fps

Obviously knocking about 7fps off each result for in-game; since R* benchmark is not the most testing compared to some heavy in-game action, which fraps shows all too well. In-game fps I find it runs fine up-to 1680x1050 or 1600x1200, and never dips below 34fps (via fraps), any higher res the game suffers as in-game action heats up.

I can run this at 2560x1600 no problem

That’s very surprising, when compared to what I’ve read about equal spec pc's to yours running GTAIV at simular very high res. Still, if true then good for you. :)

My specs are as follows:

Core2duo E6420 running at 2.56GHz
2GB DDR2 800mhz (I think)
Geforce 7900GS with 256MB ram

Is it worth me even bothering? :)

What an utterly retarded post.

Sorry but it is.
