Grand Theft Auto 4

Yup sounds like the usual anti-Vista nonsense. Lets face it, GTA4 simply doesn't run well on some PCs regardless of OS, it's down to hardware configuration and drivers.

I have just read through this thread from about page 65 onwards and someone posted here days ago that there was a boost from using windows 7....... I aint readin thru it all again though!

Hey guys. In the first post it says that ati cards have more issues with the game than nvidia, is that still true? I've a mate who's thinking of buying a new graphics card with gta4 in mind and don't want to spec him an ati card which won't be as good as an nvidia for the same price :p

my ati hd 4850 runs it a dream with med-high specs :) I think it is only hte older ati cards that are h aving issues. Not fully sure about that though!

So if I recommend him a 4850 he won't think I'm a complete bean when he tries to play it and can't very well?

He has a c2d @ 3ghz (I assume it's an E8400) and plays at 1440x900, I think.

should be fine, however the 4850 isnt the best out there, i think the ati hd4xxx cards though are pretty good. You should do a bit more background reading though, and also he needs to have a budget, or it is imposible to get him the best.

Wish I'd spent the extra over my 9800GT I got at the beginning of December

I'd think you'd need a GTX260 to get this game running really nicely. It will depend a lot on res though too, 1440 isn't too bad. I would recommend the 4870 1GB but they seem to have a lot of issues with this game and many others at the moment due to drivers, and tend to be louder.

so gta4 is ruining my life. I'm spending every living hour of it on gta4 lol. I'm up to the part where i chose *** destiny of dimitri. so after 50% i think. Got till the 19th to finish on my pc, otherwise i return to uni and have laptop graphics to play it on *sigh*

btw i'm wearing a new jumper that i got 2 days ago

Damn you for posting a spoiler with no warning!

You don't take your immense gaming rig with you?! I do, and it's a pain in the **** every time. Luckily my parents have a big motor y'see. I don't think I could go that long without my gaming machine! How else can one procrastinate?

After getting such good performance to begin with, i'm now getting increasingly worse from when I start the game to a few hours after, with lots of mini-freezes. This happens when using -availablevidmem 1.5 AND when using settings within my mem budget. Interestingly, I get better and more consistent FPS when fooling gta into thinking I have a 512mb card and upping the settings!

This freezing sounds like the memory leak problem to me, anyone else have this and any possible fix?

all fine over here, amd x2 5000, 8800gt, 2gb ram runs okay on med high, awesome game, im up to missions with ray (this shouldnt b a spoiler) and cant get enough of it!

edit: i actually installed the new drivers that it recommends, the game then didnt work, so i reverted and all is fine :P
