Zune or iPod?

Why anyone would buy an MP3 player that requires additional software to be installed on the OS is beyond me.

I know you need iTunes for the ipod. if it is the same for Zune then they both suck.

Because it allows you to do more than simply skip forward or backwards when changing tracks as you would with a cheaper mp3 player. I myself don't listen to enough music on the go to justify spending the money on an ipod or zune, so I use the cheap usb mp3 players... but I can see why some people would like the extra functionality and pay for it.

i prefer the look of the zune. but ive not used one. im not keen on ipods though, as i sell them all day so i get kinda sick and tired of seeing them. if i were to have one or the other for xmas or a birthday present it would have to be the zune. do they make smaller capacity versions of the zune with flash memory? :)

The hilarious thing is it wasn't even a Microsoft error; it was a driver produced for the real time clock in the 30gb which goes into an infinite loop when the day reaches 366, rather than the normal 365. Very simple fix as the driver is open source, MS just need to add one character (an =) and reintegrate to the firmware.

WMP, winamp and almost every other piece of software allow you to do that...

And to be fair the Touch isn't quite the same as an average mp3 player (it's more in line with Acrhos PMP). For example the more traditional ipods have very few of the features on that list, they are pretty much exactly the same setup as any other mp3 player. Having said that there is a difference, some ipods have games, while some of the new walkmans have SenseMe. Swings and roundabouts for features tbh.:)

:D

I can see that being used for fun for years to come!

If it's an open source driver then does MS provide the source code either with the Zune on their website?

Good job I wasn't referring to the software ON the ipod and zune compared to the software functionality of usb mp3 players....

So why was the response to:

Why anyone would buy an MP3 player that requires additional software to be installed on the OS is beyond me.

?

In my book that pretty obvious you were aiming it at software on an OS and not the mp3 player itself.

Edit: having re read what you wrote I see where you are coming from, it still begs the question why iTunes needs to be installed, every other big company can make their players compatable with standard software so why cant Apple?

Actually, re-reading what I wrote in regards to the original responce I posted, I can see I jumped the gun and didn't take into account him mentioning it being installed on the OS, I simply assumed he was referring to the software on the individual players. My fault entirely.

Which one has better sound quality for a music player? (the answer is the walkman)
My iPod touch is for sale, if I want to do all the otherthings you've mentioned, I'll use my phone.

You may as well have compared a ford escort to an aston martin. Obviously a product costing over 8 times more than another will be better.

I would love an ipod, the product itself is brilliant, it's a little pricey for me at present and itunes irks me bigtime. If they made it into a simple drag and drop affair (as it so easily could be and still boast the features it has) then i would snap one up instantly, until then i'm going to be using my 5 year old 20gig iriver (which still works in comparison to a friend who has been through 3 ipods in the same amount of time) and wait for them to become cheaper.

I'll stick with my garbage iRiver thanks!

As for those who argue MS v Apple for pretty much anything - they're both as bad/good as each other. Try repairing Mac equipment professionally for a few years, you'll soon learn to value them on a similar level to Microsoft, whether that's good or bad!
