Crysis Warhead activation limit

According to EA its 2 as I had a HD problem few weeks ago and lost 1 of my activations. Took around 8 emails and 3 working days to get EA to up my limit by 1 so I could play it again (I have it installed on both my PC's).

Major PIA. I would have used a keygen but none of them seem to even work with this game as it appears to connect with the Securom servers before even installing!!

it's pathetic, i've ran out of activations because I had to do some testing on some RAM and I was swapping them in and out. It turns out that changing your RAM counts as a major hardware change. The only solution is to uninstall it after you've played it so that it won't count any of this or use a crack.

Strewth, that sounds even worse than what I read about with activations...I decided a little while ago that I would pass on all games from now on that require activation before use...so far I've missed out on...

Crysis Warhead
Far Cry 2
Red Alert 3
Spore
Mass Effect
Bioshock*

All of which I would have gladly bought at release *sigh* what a state we're in.

*Bought two days ago over Steam :D

Why?

I've got Crysis, Farcry 2, Red Alert 3, Sacred 2 and Bioshock and they all work perfectly first time. The DRM/Securom isn't effecting me at all. I could see it getting extremely annoying if e.g. you have no internet, or the activation servers go down, but other than that I don't really see the problem.

They can all be installed and played on multiple computers and most of them don't even require a CD to play.

What happens if you want to replay any of the games in 5 or even 10 years?

When you've got a machine that will run Crysis at 100fps at ultra settings, just so you can go back and see what it was like....will the activation servers still be running then?
Also computers are a hobby of mine, so occasionally I will upgrade a component or two thinking I will get better performance, it's rather ironic if I can't then play the game that I upgraded my system for because of a 'major' hardware change....if I then have to go back to the publishers pleading just so I can play their game again...it's a stupid stupid system that treats the paying public like criminals.

/soapbox.

The main thing that I object to is that you legally buy a game, yet in a few years it may just be a coaster. I've only just started buying off Steam as I've been told that if ever Steam closed patches would be released for the games so they could be played without Steam being needed.

I can't see that ever happening with these games so I'll avoid them unless I can find another way of playing them, like I have with Bioshock on Steam.

I'm not sure about EA, but the creators of Sacred 2: Fallen Angel have said that if they ever discontinued their activation servers they'd simply release a patch to remove the need to activate the game. Surely EA, and other game manufacturers have to, legally, do the same?

Upgrading hardware isn't a problem, you just need to remember to manually remove the game's license from your PC before you change the hardware - most of the games will automatically do that when uninstalling, some provide a dedicated program to do it so you don't have to reinstall.

I upgrade my PC often as well, and yes it may be a bit annoying having to remember to deactivate my games, but other than that I really don't see a problem.

Wait? You can't change your hardware without losing a ****ing activation ?
What retard has thought up that, it was bad enough I lost my DRM'd music by changing just the cpu a few times, but RAM ? WTF !

GTA IV seems fine and din't ask for reactivation when I went from an E6420 to a Q9550 to a Q6600 to a Q9540 and back to another Q9550 in the past 2 weeks. Why has EA ****ed it's drm, I don't really care about activation but having both an activation limit AND losing your license on a hardware change is retarded. I mean, you say you can uninstall but why waste bloody 20 minutes of your time for nothing, a cpu swap is supposed to take 2 minutes, not 2mins + 20 mins for every modern ea game installed.

Completely Stupid system...Warhead stopped after I edited My video cards bios, I had to call EA for a new key

Exactly, it's madness...can you imaging phoning up your car maker every time you wanted to change the tyres so it will drive again and they have the power to say 'no'. Oh, and after buying it, you aren't able to sell it on...keep it or bin it.

It just wouldn't happen in any other sector yet somehow it's ok to do it to gamers...well they can go jump as far as I'm concerned.

Shows that a lot of people still don't fully understand the way activation works on games.

I've admitted above that it would be a bit annoying having to remember to deactivate your games when you change a piece of hardware, but it's not THAT much trouble.

When you uninstall the game you get the license back (some games come with a deactivation tool that lets you revoke activation without having to uninstall), you can then sell it on...

And people don't pirate cars :p

Other than the fact that the game gets deactivated when you change a piece of hardware I really don't see a problem with it unless you download pirated games and miss being able to get away with using a simple No CD crack.

Been playing Far Cry 2 today, loving it :D

You still do .

THAT much trouble.

It's more trouble than going to a site and download a crack...

Anyhow, I guess you know my stance to activation I don't mind it provided it has no rubbish like an activation limit or doesn't need reactivating on hardware changes... But reactivating on any hardware( or having to uninstall) change is the idea of a retard imo...

Never have, never will
No you don't get my answer, I'm saying you still get away by installing a crack. There's no difference compared to games that do not need activation. A proper release has the activation removed from it and you apply the crack for a game as you have been for more than a decade now. I'm just saying activation doesn't give people who download a game any more or less trouble than any game...

How is it? You enter your serial as normal and press activate, some games don't even require you to press activate at all.

No that's not my issue, I'm saying it's easier to download a crack than to uninstall a game to get your activation back for something as simple as a 2 minute hardware change... Have you even checked where ''that much trouble'' in your post was located, directly after you said it's not that much trouble to uninstall a game, I'm saying it is...

As I said, I have nothing against activating, provided I don't get a moan when I change my hardware, or about reaching a limit and telling me to call some monkeys. It is much simpler to apply a crack, than to go through the trouble of reinstalling every time you want to change your hardware, which in my case was 5 times in the past 2 weeks...

I have games I got legit that need activation, for example GTA IV or Bioshock. But neither Bioshock ( okay I have the steam version but still), or GTA IV ( which I have a retail un-modified copy off) moaned about my 5 cpu changes... I'm simply moaning about the DRM EA games adds in its games, I certainly won't stick with original exe's in EA's games, I just apply a crack and I'm done with all the rubbish.

Depends how it's implemented. Yes, I know there are cracks that completley remove the DRM/Securom protection, but I know some of the protected games still don't have proper cracks.

I've said above I don't agree with the way it deactivates your game when you change hardware, that's something that needs to be sorted. Apart from that problem I don't see the issue with DRM/Securom/activation.
