EVGA RMA - new card returned but lower spec?

I have recently RMA'd an 8800GTS 640 Mb to EVGA in Germany as it was dead.

They have sent me a 9600GT in its place without any communication at all.

The specs for the 9600GT are slightly lower than the card it replaces, especially as the old old card was 320bit and the new one 256bit, fewer shader processors etc.

I can see the advantages of this card (less power draw), smaller etc. but tbh if it doesn't cut the mustard as well as the 8800 then they can have it back!

You can buy the 9600GT for well under £100 but the 8800 still retails way above that, one assumes because it is still a better card.

Anyones experience of both would especially be appreciated.

Should I be happy with this replacement or not?

i got a 8600gts back for my 7900gt (evga)

i just solid it on the bay for way more than it was worth (i started it at 99p) and put that towards my 8800gt

it's weird, i've seen reports of other people getting cards twice as good back!

try complaining, i did, but got nowhere as the 8600gts did beat the 7900gt in some (few) benchmarks

Well the 8800 series was the top end of the NVidia cards, therefore they should really return you something thats high end, another 8800 or 9800.

Having said that, the 9600GT will probably be the most equal match to your GTS.

hope you get it sorted m8 but can i ask a question please when you registered your card did you do it on the usa site as thats were ive reg mine and sorry for jumping in on the thread

9600 GT is slightly faster so theres nothing to complain about, they only have to give equal or better performance, and they have done that. :)

KICK OFF LIKE *()& : they have sent you a low/mid range card to replace your old high end, that is not on.

EVGA used to be great ! if your card died they would take care of it by sending you a equal or better replacement.

Ok so they sent you a newer generation that is midrange, but you're old card is a generation older as as you would expect, the mid range is now equal or better than the previous high range... if this wasn't the case then nothing would progress.

I'd stick with it, the 9600GT is better than the 8800GTS you sent them, I don't think you'll get much out of complaining except to feel more bitter and waste time

Personaly I would be straight in the car at the shop ranting and raving like a mad man till I got satisfaction or they called the cops to get rid of me after of course I'd exaushed all the proper routes of complaints. I'm having to return a Graphics Card very soon that keeps crashing my computer all the time, Im hoping for a quick refund, no fuss and I'll buy a differnt card from them with the money but if get messed about at all I'll be straight on the phone to traiding standards, in my car at the shop with some of my mates and be kicking off like some sort of mental patiant all day if I have to.

They have a legal right to replace your item with the same or better and if they dont make sure you complain to trading standards, citizen advice bureau and go to the shop and dont just make a small fuss, kick off like your on somthing.

Im not saying do it right away, as a last resort of course, after you have been through all the normal channels. Bending over and taking it gets you no where these days, if they mess me about with my return belive me there going to really know about it like nothing they know.

I registered it on the main US site as that's all there is..it is not an issue RMA'ing i, they actually put you on to Germany...posted it Airsure on 21st Dec, returned today the 6th, so not bad with Xmas and all.

Getting trading standards onto it won't help me much for a firm based in Germany!

And for those who claim the 9600GT is a mid-range card, are you serious?

They can be had for little over £60, and the 8800GTS cost me £350 from OCUK two years back.

No I wasn't expecting a £350 card to replace it, just something with *800 at the end, as anything with *600 feels like a step down and sucks anus...

TBF...having looked around it does have pretty much equal performance to the 8800GTS, though this won't stop me whining like ***k to EVGA about it.

good lad someone with balls :)

though im sure there is some sort of trading standard with foreign companies otherwise we'd be getting skanked left right and centre.

9800GT would be a fair card to give you.. *800 range like yours and GT as yours wasnt a GTX. 9600gt is a bit shabby even if it has the same performance. Another analogy for you: just because the mini cooper has the same performance as a e-type jag doesnt mean its a worthy replacement :p lol

thanks for the reply and hope you get yourself sorted

Well I just benchmarked it using 3dMark 2006 and it is 5-20 percent slower than the 8800GTS at higher resolutions (I run as many things as poss at 1920 x 1200 on 24" monitor) and my favourite CSS runs about 30 FPS slower on the 9600GT at this res than the 8800GTs did :-)

Have emailed EVGA (they supplied an address for a "director" a few weeks back in case of complaints) to ask them to think again, and yes the Mini/Jag analogy is very appropriate indeed.
