Wowzers, more of this 'credity crunch munch' bargain fever. bet it was a lovely motor.

I would rather have an S3 than an R32.

So would I.

Idont think any of the current Hot Hatches really offer the real Hot Hatch feel, they are too big and lardy, If you are spending 9K and dont dont do the miles, get something special,Old M5 or some nutter jap mobile. Are DC5's in this range now? It all depends what you want from a car.

FWIW, I wouldnt have the ST over the R32 or S3.

As has been said, look at S3's also.

Cupra R's are good but I'd imagine in comparisson with an S3 or R32 it'd be outclassed by a fair way (hard to say, being a Leon owner ;))

I'm tempted by an r32 when I finish uni in a years time, although Evo 8's and even 9's are getting cheaper all the time and for me I'd have an evo (especially if I was doing your mileage!!) but it's not a hatchback obviously :p

I think the mk4 R32 will hold its value very well, not so much the mk5 (from what i've read and from having a bog standard mk5 as a courtesy car for a few months)

How about a Civic Type R? One on the auction thread on Pistonheads went for ~£10k on an 07 plate with 16k miles, so I'd imagine these can be had for less if you don't mind a few more miles :)

If you only do those amount of miles, get something a bit more 'fun' than an Golf. Yeah there is no doubting they are good cars, but I would certianly have something like a vx220/elise.

i have a golf gti edition 30, 230 book figure, but they come out about 240. remap to 300+ and more with just a zorst and better intake.

as standard ed30 is quicker than an ST. and sorry, ford st's are everywhere and mainly (not all) driven by older chavs. sure they are much cheaper but lose more. plus the build quality.... hum.. no comp..

the ed30 is much the same as r32, apart from the v6 and 4wd, it maybe a tad slower due to weight of 4wd, but launch and cornering will obvious be better.,..

you could always look at getting an older golf (mk1/mk2) that has had a 1.8T conversion.

Depends if you want the comfort of a modern car!

Odd suggestion; if he wants something like an R32, which is a comfortable fast hatch, is a rickety old Mk1/mk2 really the sort of thing he would also want?

Drexel's a different case, it's possible the OP might be too, but it seems unlikely :p

The focus is certainly on a par with the Golf in terms of quality, 75k miles in mine, and leather on the seats is as fresh as the day it came from the factory (well apart fom the smell:p), and its squeak and rattle free.Dont delude yourself that a better class of person drives the Golf, they are all cheap run of the mill shopping carts.

Yes much the same.........:p

Yup, can get a fairly nice one for the OP's budget. However, a 2001/2002 50000 mile Honda for 9.5k may make some people cry.

So what, let them cry, different facets of motoring appeal to different people, to some the soft touch plastics define a car, to others not etc etc.

That lad that had that massive thread on here, did that didnt he, or was it the 2.0t into the MK2, I bet its just as much 'fun' as Waynors R32.
