If you lost your job - How screwed would you be?

The armed forces are crying out for people if anything plenty of 20 something men can sign up and earn a wage and have a blast.

Thinking about it maybe OK for a while. I have the Car and Cards to pay off.

Me and the wife would have to move somewhere (a lot) smaller but should be ok on her wages to live. I have a few options open to me if it did happen, consultancy etc. But wouldnt earn as much or have the steady income that we need.

Saying that my job is pretty safe **crossses fingers** assistant network manager in a school, and they dont tend to go out of business :) especially one as good as ours!

Good luck to anyone who is in danger of this, I really feel for you.

when i lost my job i was gutted but in all honesty love being able to doo what i want i just lounge about play guitar keyboard stare at my fish and go out cycling partys with the boys at the weekend , 2 days after losing my job i realised theres a lot more too life as my brother died and since that day i aint been the same person he took his own life and this changed everything proper messed my head up and has caused me to be a bit of a manic depressive at times which im sorta gettin to grips with and almost able to cope with now but eh money does make the world go round.... as puff biggy or whatevrer said mo money mo problems sad but true

As I have just been told today that I am going to be made redundant, not at all scared. I will just do what I have done in the past and get another job. Till then we will spend less and reduce outgoings.

Got a couple of small debts to pay off and my girlfriend could support me short term.

Any longer than short term would seriously damage our chances of getting a house and other expensive toys :)

..Fingers crossed I never have to find out for real

Where did you work or what did you do?

If i lost my job, i'd be screwed in about 6 months as that would be when savings would be exhausted by i think.

Fortunately, I suspect I could take a loan from my parents which would be able to cover all my out goings until my current rental agreement on the flat is up at which point i'd be moving back home until I found another job.

Luckily, i'm not too worried as although we've had redundancies I think we're just using it as an opportunity to become more pyramid shaped rather than barrel shaped and as i'm down the bottom, things should be ok. That and my current client has offered me a job if I want it were the worst to happen.

IT in a financial services company. Mainly server and desktop stuff. Big company and have been with them for 11 years so going through the whole "consultation" process now. They have to give me at least 11 weeks notice but have said the earliest leave date will be the end of March for anybody so we will still be eligble to receive our bonus (paid in March).

I will take a bit of time to update my professional qualifications, maybe finally get that MCSE or maybe a newer MCTS exam or two to go along with my experience and then start looking for a new job.

In one way... totally.
Bills to pay weekly and they would soon come knocking if I stopped paying.
They would take the cars, the tv, the pc, the other boys toys etc etc but that would be all they could take as that's all I have.
However,
I live in a built and paid for house, owned by someone else, so they couldn't touch that so would at least have a roof over my head.

Wonder if they would be allowed to take the tools that I use to earn my crust, I don't think they can.. they are about 10K's worth

Not good

Well i work for a local council, so at least thats something. But all council's in NI are joining together in 2011 so that meants job cuts.

I am IT btw

I'd be ok until my savings ran dry, so instead of just living off my savings I'd try and start up a small business or something... Not easy tho and higher risk. No pain, no gain!

Have a blast - literally :p

If I lost my job we'd probably just about get by but we'd have to seriously pull our horns in. My other half is very unlikely to be made redundant so we are very lucky in that respect.

I'd be royally screwed. Far too many debts and mortgage on the go - already living month-to-month on wages (income from both me and the Mrs). Cutting that in half would be devastating. I'm sure if I sold most of the "luxuries" I own, ie. consoles, computers, TV etc. we'd be able to pay most of the debts off right away, but emotionally at least I think it would be too much to take.

Nah, chance of a fresh start somewhere new and get out of a reasonably comfortable rut I have been in for a few years.

This is something I've been giving some thought to over the past couple of months as the company I work for is quite small, really only just pushing into the UK market and the main investor has already starting making noises about the company not making any profit yet. Having said that, this year's pipeline could potentially explode so might not be a big issue.

Our main outgoings (including rent) could just about be covered by the wifes wage and I have a couple of months worth of salary in savings - which I'm sure would cover us for at least 6 months if I cut our spending right back and claimed what I would be entitled to in benefits.

On that subject I would be looking at JSA of £60.50 per week, could probably get Rent paid up to £650 per month and Council Tax Benefit would take care of that other big expense.

Just hope not to be put in that situation.

If the worst came to the worst and we both lost our jobs, we could move back in with her Father who lives alone in a nice big 4-bed house.

Lucky it's just credit cards and not a family to house and feed.

yeah true, although im more annoyed that several companies ive worked for his year have been ***** and ended up leaving. the last one i never got to work for were offering me about £10k more than i was on, company car, health ins, life ins, dental ins and pension
