Those with VAG 1.8T engines

Not really, as long as you keep them well maintained, the only things that may suffer are the transmission and the actual turbo itself.

Mine was stock 150bhp and come February will be running 225-230bhp, not bad for a polo ;)

It's still on the k03s turbo though, so it will probably need replaced in say 60-70k miles, but it's only like £400 for a new turbo so no big deal really, also gives me an excuse to put a bigger one on :D

I'm still standard Octy vRS 1.8T 180Bhp, 2004, most I've had is 42 I think, when being stupidly careful. General is 35mpg on a 30 mile trip with 3 miles of agonising Ealing traffic and doing 80 ish motorway.

Toker, also I assume replacing that stupid plastic n something or other valve? I'm sure mine is going again.

You mean the Bosch re-circ valve? Some people say they run them on big boost...I for one didn't want to risk it and got a forge 007p before remap etc

What the hell are you lot running on to get over 35mpg in a Cupra R?

Best I've managed is about 33mpg and that was taking it really easy.

/checks lead boots ;)

they hold it back so it's not faster than the golf.

No, they hold it back because it's a Polo and it's chassis can't really handle the power. It only really exists to add a bit of halo to an otherwise pretty dull model range, it's not a serious hot hatch which is why it's always conspicious by its absence from any conversation/group test/article about modern hot hatches.

It's the modern day Escort GTi.

you could say the same about remapping pretty much anything, "why didn't they give it that power as standard then?" If everyone thought that way the whole world would be filled with dull run of the mill motors and the tuning scene wouldn't exist.

As standard no the chassis isn't great for cornering, but that's the whole reason I bought it, I know potential and I don't like off the shelf motors. Upgrade the suspension and ARB's and you have a great handling motor. It isn't included in most conversation as you can get cars that are better (as standard) for cheaper. Personally I like to spend money making a car different and in the process perform above its expectations, sleepers are where it's at.

It handles the power perfectly, if you are a retard and can't control your right foot or know how to drive a turbo motor, then yes you might kill yourself if the roads are wet, otherwise it's great fun. As for not a serious hot hatch, I can't think of any modern small hot hatches off the top of my head with the same tuning potential.

Thats a candidate for quote of 2009 right there, that is.

Good job you don't pick best quotes of the year then isn't it, or that would be one boring read

41.3mpg on a 100 miles run 240bhp custom mapped 1.8T in a mk1 Octavia on 99ron fuel @ 70mph with a couple 50mph stretches.

Once you start doing 80mph instead it gets around 36mph.
