NEC LCD24WMGX3 Professional Gaming 24" Widescreen

I have taken the plunge and placed an order today after many weeks of trying to decide which monitor to get. Also managed to get one of the gtx 280 at the low price. I can't wait until tomorrow :)

I will likely use it dual screen with my current 226bw. I know it is a daft question, I have used dual screen before but they have been the same size monitors. With these going to be differents sizes and more importantly different resolutions is there any down side to this e.g. requires more GPU resource to manage?

Been pondering whether to write about my experience with the screen here or not.
Wouldn’t want to ruin anyone’s joy.
On the other hand I feel potential buyers have the right to know.

You see the thing is that this screen ghosts bad. It seems black and dark colors cause worse ghosting.

A little baffled that no owners noticed this yet.

If you play a fast FPS game like half life 2 deathmatch you are able to drag small trails behind you.

In hl2dm you can move really fast and when you do so, around a dark object, you can provoke Photoshop filter liquefy like effects. Of course tried every possible OSD setting looking for a remedy to no avail.

Apart from fast gaming it’s a very, very nice screen. Without a doubt the best desktop experience I have had. I mean it goes very dim if you want it to without losing any dark detail. The sharpest text I have seen Nice and crisp. Gradients are displayed without banding. It’s very nice calibrated out of the box. And then something I haven’t experienced before it seems to have a very soft to the eye white, hard to explain.

It also has a very nice blackpoint (TFTcentral measured 0,19 cd/m2) almost as good as the HP lp2475w and no backlight bleeding.
Rather sad that the area where this screen should excel is actually the area where it falls short.
Had it for 4 days then sold it (lost about 100£).
For me the excessive ghosting was a dealbreaker.

Feel free to ask any questions. Since I have also owned the HP lp2475w I can compare the two.

Noticed this straight away, its darks/greys that cause it. Done 2 quick videos and put them on youtube to demonstrate.
Certain games/scenarios are worse at it than others but when buying a monitor in this size its always a question of what pros/cons to have.

ps: i play vast amounts of games of varying genres (mainly FPS) and im a fussy bugger with an OCD like desire for perfection from/with anything, so i find it a bit annoying sometimes but im starting to adjust (ignore ;) ).

I've had this one for about a week now.

I do see theres some ghosting on it, but it's not by far as bad as nightrhyme makes it out to be. It's not the fastest panel around, and struggles more with dark dcenes than bright ones, but it's at least on the level of the current 24" Samsung TN panels, I returned a T240 after a few weeks in december and I can't say that this one feels any slower than it did (though, that one fell completely flat on everything else).

Stuff like some small banding on gradients and lack of black level and a few other adjustments the other expensive NECs have are way more dissapointing to me.

what do the other owners have to say about this ghosting issue, seems to be a big one..
I'm about to purchase this monitor so some hands on experience would be really crucial!

I sold my laptop and used the funds to by one of these. Due to arrive on Tuesday. Shade cheaper from a competitor, main pull was that they accepted Paypal.

Eye'd this up when it was £6-700, lot of respect for NEC so I'm sure i'll be more than happy at £450.

I sent the BenQ FP241W back because of the ghosting. I replaced it with this NEC and I've been delighted with it for gaming - it feels a lot smoother than the BenQ FP241W anyway. I haven't played hl2dm on it, but I haven't even noticed the ghosting when playing L4D and CS:S. All in all, I think it's simply fantastic.

..So it seems that some have ghosting and some do not?
Is it a production quality issue, although it is hard to believe this for a NEC monitor.
Or is it that some are more sensitive to ghosting?

To be honest, it's not a case of some have ghosting and some do not. It's just some people notice it more than others. As I said, I noticed it on the BenQ FP241W, but I don't notice it on the NEC which I guess is strange seeing as they're similar panels! But this definately feels more responsive and also has the added advantage of MP mode which reduces ghosting almost entirely.

All about perception, if you look for it its there i.e. in CSSource, quickly moving left to right or looking left to right with player models in view you'll see a VERY quick flash of ghosting.

I have only had the the monitor a day and have not seen any ghosting yet but will probably search for it now! At the moment I am just really happy with it coming with no dead pixels and looks good.

The only thing I am struggling with so far is the huge amount of options and finding the right settings for me. I have my 226BW besides it and one thing I cannot seem to get it to do is display a warm style of colouring like I have on my samsung (text mode is the closest but too much yellow). The only reason is sometimes the backround feels too bright when reading a lot. Its not a big thing and will probably get use to it.

I do have one question for those who use MP mode, do you find it quite dark and flickery along with the colours not being so good? or have I missed an option?

Yes, MP-mode does make it flicker.

I don't think it's doing anything to the colors directly, but it works by inserting black frames in-between images, so it brings the brightness and contrast down a bit.

I'm keeping it turned off on mine.

I'm waiting to get a refund on my HP LP2475w (from another shop) and I just hope it will be processed in time for me to order this, I should have got this in the first place! :)

Will this screen work without having to calibrate the colours? It seems like every other expensive widescreen is wide gamut and thus pretty useless if you don't spend an extra £100 on a hardware calibrator... Will this just work and look good off the shelf with a bit of messing with the OSD? I would be using it in linux, so no NEC drivers or anything like that available :( Or should i just go for a £200 Samsung TN panel and save myself the hassle?

Will this screen work without having to calibrate the colours?
Yes. It is standard gamut, and the sRGB-preset matched my old 2090UXi (calibrated about a year ago) pretty much spot on. Very decent for a factory pre-set.

I don't have equipment to measure this stuff, but subjectively blues were a tiny bit more pronounced on the 24WMGX3, and blacks are a bit cooler, but I think that's just as much of a weakness in the old 2090 than in this one.

I'd say it's perfectly fine for normal use and hobby-level image/photo with the standard settings. People wanting more than that should probably be looking at the 2690, not this one.

Edit: Drivers are usually not required for any monitor, not this one either. There is an ICC profile on the bundled CD for color-managed apps, which I have no doubt will be decent in whatever OS. There shouldn't be any issues as long as you put the correct modes into your X config, just like any other 1920x1200 monitor.
