Ever worked a 12 hour shift on a ward? Until then, kindly, shhhh. Nurses do nothing but run around non-stop, yes your not hauling bags of cement, but when you have spent your shift repositioning bed-bound patients, washing people and wiping bottoms, I would rather the cement. Its just that most nurses choose not to complain about it, its the job you choose. Try reading this, its a pretty accurate post

12hr shifts
3*15mins - Paid
1*30min - Unpaid

Shifts are what I chose as I was sick of travelling every day back and forther especially on 5hr shifts (half) -_-

as for nursing the lil sis is a nurse at one of the main hospitals in newcastle, works on multiple wards AFAIK and shes on 12hr shifts atm and I can gaurantee you she is knackered after every one of the shifts, and some of the things she's said shes had to do/clean up *shudder* could'nt do that myself and to be doing stuff like this on and off for 12hours I dont think I could cope, Kudos to those of you that do this kind of work on these shifts!

+1 My brother is nurse. Understaffed, overworked, underpayed.

He's often the only nurse on the ward, well him, an auxillery and maybe a student and is flat out from morning until night. He works 12.5 hours, but never gets away on time so usually 13 hour days. I know I couldn't do it, having spent a lot of time as a patient I have huge respect for them.
 
I have to work 9.30 - 12 and 2 - 3.30 on a working day, other than that, can have breaks etc whenever. So long as I do an average of 7hr 24min a day over a period of time (im guessing a year) then its all good :D

Try working in a crappy kitchen,

10hrs without a break. Last week i was in the kitchen on my own for 11hrs, im sure that isnt legal.. but who cares.

To be honest i can work normally 9hrs without being bothered about a break
 
in my last job:

work 6 hours to get 15/20 min break

8 hour shift got ya 1hr unpaid, 2 x 15min paid breaks.


current job:

work 7am -3pm get approx 2 hrs worth of breaks
 
I don't get paid for an hour a day, which is supposed to cover 3X 20 min breaks in a 9 hour day. In reality I work about 12 hours and the most I have gotten in over 5 months is 20 minutes total. Today for instance the only thing resembling a break was sitting down to tell someone they were dying :(

Ho hum, in the grand sceme of things it could be worse. At least we have jobs
 
My job involves sitting infront of 2 monitors all day tapping on a mouse. And I'm not allowed to work more than 6 hours straight without having at least a 30 min break.
 
Legally you have to take a break after 4hrs

I do 9hr shifts and get two 15min breaks paid and 1hr unpaid, Although I just skip my lunch and go home early as I do a 5am to 1pm shift every day.

depends on the job but generally as i have qouted on 1st page its now legally 6 hours.

since every one talking about their breaks i might as well tell you mine, i work in retail part time.

if u work say 12pm-9pm u get 1 hour unpaid break. if you work 12-6 u get half hour unpaid( these reason is it used to be every 5 hours legally) but the way the business works they have kept half hour every 6 hour shift.

any ways ones one busy saturday i was on 12-9 with a hour break at 2 so then i'd be working 3-9 with a break and asked main manager do i get 15min paid break and he said "no because it legally every 7 hours worked" i said prove it but he could not at the time so i left it at that but did take 5mins to have a drink.


any ways now that i have found the legal answer i will put it in staff room for other staff to see. Now that is not a busy period if i work 5 min over 6 hours without a break i will not stand for it.

The company rule is, you are expected to upto stay 15mins more after your shift if required unpaid.
 
Whats a break?!

I prefer to just get everything done and have a break when I finish work. On quiet times I browse the web, and just eat at my desk anyway, I have no reason to go out of the office so may aswell continue working.

I dont get paid for breaks but its better being sat bored, makes the day go so much quicker if you continue working.
