Giant plasma TVs face ban in battle to green Britain

Still yet to see an LCD that will deal with fast moving images suitably to beat a plasma.

I looked long and hard before I bought my Kuro last month and for movies large screen LCD's just dont cut it I'm afraid. Pixelation and ghosting are easily visible on even the highest end LCD, SD also looks awful especially on the low bandwidth freeview channels and fast moving sports channels.

The tech has moved on spades though in the last year, so hopefully by the time this passes through (if at all) then LCD's might be as good as Plasma.

Still rather than the government trying to ban and tax everything that contributes to the usage of energy, why dont they invest in bloody making electricity more efficiently while at the same time pushing for a more energy conscious populace.

How stupid, but LCD's are better anyway...

As long as they don't restrict sound systems I'll be happy... :)

Oh and shhh..!!

Nothing wrong with LCD's for movies at all, load of rubbish.

A lot of people do seem to have jumped on the "All LCD is rubbish" bandwagon. Some are good, some are excellent value for money. Yes the kuro is setting the bar high, it does not mean that everything else should be scraped and set fire to.

I didn't mean for this to be another LCD vs Plasma debate, soz! ;) :p

With the power of google I just found a 1920 x 1080 plasma, I thought they didn't exist.... Well I guess they do! I thought 1024 x 768 was the max res for some reason... :o

Your right generally theres nothing wrong with LCD's for movies. But put one next to a similarly specced plasma theres no competition in my eyes.

Full HD plasma's took a while to emerge at an affordable consumer level bud, LCD's emerged at the sub £1000 price point well before so thats where you probably coming from.

A few people I know would agree with that. They're the one's who think it should be set to Dynamic and have it so bright you have to wear sunglasses.

Few, if any LCD's currently on the market can handle motion as well as most plasma's.

The level you find acceptable is obviously a lot lower than most. I wish I could have low standard like you. It would make picking my next TV a case of which one I liked the look of rather than its performance.

It's only a matter of time before LCD's surpass Plasmas when it comes to picture quality
The latest Sony and Samsungs are getting damn close, esp with black level depth/detail
Plus you don't have to run them in, worry about screen burn etc etc

Awesome we have our own mystic meg.

Perfect Black level is way off still, didn't you realise that the LED sets actually turn off the pixels rather than actually being able to give just a low black level. And then they have to be turned on again, and it can only be done in pitch black areas, plenty of problems associated here. O and there is the halo effects and all the annoying problems with the samsungs and especially the philips. Don't get me started on the input lag and poor SD quality still. Soo many things make up the picture other than 0 black level, remeber that ;)

Plasma screens also have their own little niggles, but the OMG IMAGE RETENTION comments really do have to stop. I haven't seen a panny set with screenburn EVER, and the Kuros can take anything you can throw at them, and believe me I have tried.

Ye it's getting really close ;)

This, up until recently plasma has had better black levels, but the Sammy 52" which is LED backlit, has amazing blacks, on par with plasma... LED local lighting should improve things even further...

Like I posted above, LED tech isn't the holy grail and plasma beating tech soo many people have made it out to be.

Also, the LCD is better resolution (1920x1080) means it wins. HAHA! :p :D

Still, people should be able to buy whatever screen they want... plasma, lcd, even a projector!

I think you forgot about all the FULL HD plasmas out there with that res, like say the panny PZ range, oooo some LGs, and of course the Kuro range.

Your right that people need to be happy, but there is still far to much misinformation going round rather than actual facts.

When it comes to gaming, is it still the case that LCD's command this area and if so why even if screen burn isn't an issue really with panny's or the pioneers?

I don't know why people believe this or what facts there are but my Panny's look excellent when im gaming on my PS3!

How are LCD's better? This is something i really want to know...

Your right there -Ad-.
I must confess i was one of those people who thought LCD's were the bees knees and was worried about what i had been told about Plasma's. Now i own 2 Plasmas and they get a lot of use and not a single problem with screen burn!

I've gamed on my screens for 3 to 4 hours at a time and, i've left it on the same channel for hours and its been fine.

The only problem i had once was that my family left it on the same channel for around 11 hours which left a very faint ghost image on the screen where the channel logo was but this went after 20/30min of normal use.

People need to realise that plasma tech has moved on!

Thats why I ask the question. I'm on the verge of purchasing a PZ80 but there are so many threads and posts around the net praising the LCD for games even though I hear the PQ of games on plasma's look stunning.

It must be the IR/Screen Burn scare that get folk to sway for the LCD when it comes to gaming?

Speaking of the PZ80, I just noticed the thread on AV regarding the brightness strobing problem. May have to put my purchase on hold :(

I hate such ridiculous ideas, if we want to mess up the planet by buying big plasma TV's than that's our choice. What's next, banning all cars with bigger engines than 1400cc, because they produce too many emmisions ?

Back on topic this will never happen. People pay for and are responsible for their own electricity bills, it would be just like saying they are going to ban petrol and leave diesel. what a load of rubbish!

Ahh i see. Just reading through the thread.
They say it happens on walls and in dark scenes where the the foreground (or focus point) is lit.

Well, i've watched The Dark Knight on blu-ray a few times now and i've never noticed it. The Dark Knight does have a hell of a lot of dark scenes where the characters are lit. Also watched The Kingdom of Heaven which is shot in a similar way.

Cant say i notice anything at all.
