Tonight was the last ever gig at the London Astoria as it is being forced to close to make way for a Crossrail station & development on the site.

Such a big shame as the venue has a big history and some huge bands have played there down the years. There are plans to build a bigger new venue on the Tottenham Court Road development nearby but no times or dates have been given.

The line-up for the final gig was:

Good riddance, it was a dump. With far superior venues cropping up like the Roundhouse, places like the Astoria really did seem stuck in the past. It's the 21st Century, it would be good to see gigs in an air-conditioned clean and modern venue rather than feeling like you're watching a band from inside a storm drain.

Astoria was great not the best venue in the world but i have some damm fond memories of it.

Astoria wasnt stuck in the past at all. They wanted to refirb but whats the point in doing that when your gunna get shut down either way.
 
Loads of memories but the place was horrible, during packed gigs you could feel sweat dripping off the rotten ceiling fixtures. And every time you saw someone trying to clean their leather jacket of something sticky you couldn't help but recall the place is hosting bottom quality trannie and raving gay parties 5 nights in a week.

It is? wow... very very fond memories of that place. Glorious Indie chick meat market that it was...

Shame the astoria is going but acoustically there are far better venues in the city. Best memory for me was seeing Emperor play there several years ago and then again about 18 months ago. Good times.

Yeah, it wasn't nicest of venues in London but I've got so many great memories from it. The location was handy for getting home too.

I think he means you saying it wasnt stuck in the past but then saying they wanted to refurb was a contradiction because why refurb it if it wasnt old
 
The dirtiness was exactly what made The Astoria such an awesome venue. You don't go to a metal gig to be air-conditioned and clean.

Go to a gig in the Roundhouse and you'll think differently. When I went to see Opeth there a couple of years ago, more people seemed to be going on about the venue than the performance.
