Eden Lake

Reason? Explain? With the hoods?! Lol, that would be unrealistic mate, as you can't do such things without being spat on, shouted at or stabbed/shot/bricked.

I didn't say it would have worked.

It would have been MORE realistic to have him legitimately attempt to reason with them, and for all his efforts get spat on/bricked just as you say. That would have taken every piece of control straight out of their hands and created a much more brutal situation.

Except they didn't - the guy just acts like a twerp, plays the victim and gets treated like one. Hell, he doesn't even fight back at ANY point - doesn't smack one of them, does nothing. I found it hard to identify with such a spineless individual and I found it a little insulting that he is what the film protrays as a "decent, civilised individual".

Still, I did enjoy it and the ending is very effective, but I think the script could have done with a couple more polishes.

A decent, civilized individual would not start a fight outnumbered by a bunch of youths armed with knives. Even Ross Kemp might think twice :D

I didn't say he would have started it - they quite clearly did that. However, when a situation escalates to that level are you telling me there isn't a point where you're eventually going to get physical? Does self-preservation mean anything? To just lie there and take it like some kind of dead weight annoyed me.

He did a runner and tried to drive off though. Don't forget if he's fighting a few of them the others could have gone and stabbed his wife. Surely protecting the other half is more important. Seems the safest option.

Just made the mistake of watching this a second time with a date tonight. I liked it the first time but I watched it very drunk and the overt sadism of it was kind of lost on me. This time more sober I was it was god damn stressful and even though she enjoyed it we were both mildly traumatized by the end (and Green Room was similarly brutal but at least the good guys won). And yes, I have a extremely strong tolerance for violence but the movie starts tense, carries on brutally, and then ends mercilessly and depressingly. Oof. :D

PS: I think it is a great (if of course exaggerated) movie aside from a couple of dumbass moves by Michael Fassbender.

8/10.

I would have taken her away to another town and 5 star hotel for a dirty weekend the moment the chavs got heavy with the attitude on the beach and never gone back. He was seemingly oblivious to the obvious danger and that annoyed me somewhat.

PPS: Kelly Reilly is soooo hot. A true English Rose.

Eden Lake is basically a documentary about life in Dagenham & Barking.

I always get this film confused with 'Funny Games' (Tim Roth) another brit horror which invokes rage. :D

Watch the German original, it's superb.
