Universal Remotes

Has anyone had a problem with the 555 and a Samsung lcd. I still can't get it to turn the darn thing on. although it will turn it off. any ideas.
However on the original remote you do seem to have to hold the power button down for a second or two to start the tv, not just a simple press.

Sorry to jump on the band wagon but I am seriously thinking about one of these as I have remotes in the lounge for everything like most people:
TV, Amp, Video, Sky, Dvd Player, Squeezebox etc.

Are they very simple to set up and I am a bit worried as never used a universal remote before and spending money on something I have not played with is always a gamble.

I take it the macro is: turns on a few things and pre sets them to how I want them?

Anything else I should consider? or think about before buying one ?

(I am Looking at the Harmony one) is that the best one unless I spend a lot more which I dont want to do on a 1000/1100?

Also any one got any experiance with it working with a Squeezebox?

You can check compatible equipment at Logitech compatability checker

They are quite easy to set up and tweek to your needs, I cant recommend them enough. The one seems to be a popular choice and the activities works exactly how you describe macro's.
go for it :)

I am sure the squeezebox will work with it as its made by logitech ;)

Thanks, actually the squeezebox was not made by logitech, logitech brought "slimdevice" out a couple of years ago, great piece of kit though.

I recently got the 785 to replace one of my two 525's I've now had for 2 years, and it's that little bit better, namely that it comes with a cradle that recharges the remote (and looks cools too), and the display is colour with 6 buttons rather then 4..

I've had pronto's and numerous other universal remotes, but the Harmony was a revelation for me, I used to spend hours doing macro's and layouts for the Pronto to switch everything on/off, the Harmony does it automatically with the Activities function..

So another big vote for any Harmony..

Got a question:

If I am using the Harmony one and I have for eg: pressed the watch TV button and the harmony has done it's thing and I have watched tv for a while then I decide I would like to watch a DVD. If I then press the watch DVD button, would it then not switch my TV off ? or would it somehow know the TV is already on ?

Also is there different Icons/pictures to choose from for me putting certain commands in for certain equipment? do you have a list that you can choose from

It works with discrete commands rather than toggle power on and off button like the remote. It actually has a power on and seperate power off command. To watch a DVD it knows it needs the TV and DVD on so would send a power on command to either and would know the TV was already on anyway as you previously used the watch TV activity.

had the harmony 885 for a year or so now always been spot on, and when things do fail to work as expected (usually due to not keeping the controler pointed at the equipment long enough) the help button sorts things out.

The only grumble would be the quality of the buttons, the first one I had had quite a few didgy buttons that took quite a lot of pressure to work, contacted Logitec a coule of weeks ago and they sent out a new one the next day and so far this one feels a lot better.

I know you cannot name competitors here. But looking around on line it seems to be around £110 mark. Just I want to buy it from somewhere that takes paypal as I have some funds to use in there.

That about the right price?

Anyone know the difference between the 1000 and 1100, The 1000 has some big discounts around now it seems..... looks tempting...

Ok I took the plunge and ordered one £100 delivered. It better be good and worthwhile,

Also on my sky remote I use the "Favourites" colour button and Info button a lot. Is that possible with the harmony one ?

If anyone has the time to answer my question above and also normally when I use the Sky remote it has TV Guide buttons etc, does this remote has the facility to do the same ?

Okay mine was delivered today. Have had a play with it and set it up and all works fine now. Just some fine tuning to do.

I have set up my favourite channels with icons that I watch a lot on Sky, but when I press the picture icon on my favourites to choose a channel, it then types it on screen BUT quite slow. Any way of speeding the typing up?

Great little gadget,

Can the 1000 do this? I like the idea of hitting one button and having everything turn on and the TV going to the right HDMI input. Sounds rosey.

Yes it can. With one press of a button it can turn the tv on, turn the amp on, turn on sky/virgin, change the tv to the sky/virgin input, change the amp to the tv input.

or if you are already watching say for example virgin and want to watch sky, then with one button it change he input on the tv, change the input on the amp, turn on virgin box and turn off sky :)

Its a great bit of hardware
