HTC HD - you got one? what you think??

Ok - you're all going to hate me and sorry to say this but I think I'm falling out of love with this phone. It has some fantastic features, the OS looks cool, the screen is by far the best thing about it, it looks sexy and well made, Igo satnav is brilliant...

...but..

I just can't get on with the touch screen interface, although much better than previous implementations it doesn't take much to expose the shortcomings of WM and I've resorted to using the stylus which kind of defeats the point for me.

Whilst it gets easier to use the touch screen after a bit of practice it's still nowhere near the usability of the iphone. Too many times I find myself not being able to scroll things by finger or selecting the wrong thing. It's just not as responsive and easy to use.

The mail app is rubbish - the little envelope view is pointless and to see all your messages at once just drops you into the WM mailbox.

The touch hard keys at the button don't light up ! What's that about ?

Sorry but that's how I feel, I do think it's a very powerful device and if you're from a PDA background you'll probably love it. I think I want a device which is more phone/multimedia based so today I've put a preorder in for a Nokia 5800 and see how I get on with that..

Anyone wanna buy a nearly new Touch HD ? ;)

Pete

admittedly the touch screen does get annoying sometimes when you hit the wrong place, but im slowly getting there.

agreed on the mail app, is rather crud :D

i could understand if you were going for an iphone, but the 5800... have you seen the videos? the responsiveness looks shocking! :(

Anyone got/seen any images of what the virtual keyboard (the TouchFlo one, not the WM one) looks like on the HD? I'm rather addicted to the real keyboard on my TyTN and I'm not sure I want to go virtual.

Of course, there's always the option to wait and see if the Touch HD Pro rumours pan out.

I guess the PRO version is the same as the HD with a slide out keyboard, thats going to be one thick size phone though.... hope it comes with a rucsac lol..

actually sneakypeaky, you might want to check out xda-d for latest winterface iphone themes.

has improved mine 100% :D

Is anyone experiencing problems with video playback? Mine is dropping frames playing back avi files at native resolution (768 x 500 or something) - stuttering quite badly. I'm having to recode through Movie Maker at the moment, to a much lower resolution and bit rate which is a shame as at native the quality on this screen is fantastic.

Also, what's the concencus on the best skin around at the moment? The default one is ok but it gets old quite quickly.

big thread at xda-d re video playback on this phone. A real shame as you say as the screen is so good but the hardware just doesn't seem to be up to the job. What player are you using ? Some players don't use the hardware accelaration yet. Having said that WM does and you can get decent results with the right bitrate and settings etc although as you say content needs to be recoded.

I may try and get this phone as i'll be able to upgrade. I guess this can be done at the carphone warehouse? Or do they add all those silly addons like they usually do or would it be easier and a better deal to upgrade by phoning orange? Just not sure i can wait for it to arrive :p

Any recommendations to upgrade the battery? Heavy use sees my handset last a day, getting to 60% battery from morning to evening. It can just about eek out 2 days - would dearly love to get this up to 3.

Hey guys im looking to upgrade to this on the 17th of feb. But i wondered if i could get some tips or things to say down the phone to get the best deal?

For starters my contract runs out in may but i can upgrade as soon as 17th of february. I think ringing thme will give me the best chance of a cracking deal correct?

Im not really looking to pay more then 30quid a month.

Things i really wana get is:

Internet package, is 500MB the best orange do?
Unlimited texts, a must for me. Or at least about 1500
At least 600min, 900 would probably be ideal though
Free phone if possible.
Also possibly a memory card?

Whats the best way of going about getting this as cheap as possible.

:EDIT:

I was looking at buying memory cards else where as well and i can get 8GB for 18 quid but its class 2 and im not really sure what sorta speed i want for a phone.

I really don't think there is any way you will get that for £30 a month,

I got the phone free and pay £35 a month but have 5 months half price line rental (through redemption) and they threw in a bluetooth headset

I get 600 mins 500 texts and unlimited internet

And I thought that was a pretty good offer

But on the plus side I think they all come with free 8gb memory cards, mine did anyway

I must have got a good guy on a good day when I renewed! I had only been with Orange for 12 months on a contract, and even then it was a £25 a month "student" contract (really rubbish, came with an SPV E650, 100 minutes, 1000 texts).

I had set my heart on a G1 on T-Mobile, so phoned up to ask for the PUK code and the guy really tried to keep me!

In the end he put me on Dolphin 35 but with a £5 a month discount. So I have 600 minutes, unlimited texts, HTC Touch HD that cost me £107 up front but that was put back onto my account as credit and the Orange "unlimited" data package (i.e. 500mb or whatever it is), only stipulation was that I had to go to an 18 month account. Fine by me ;)

Loving the Touch HD though, a MUCH superior phone to my last HTC device (the E650) which was basically terrible, it broke all the time... I agree its interface is not as nice as the iPhone's, but it also has other aspects that are far superior, the screen itself, the general speed of the device etc etc, mine also came with an 8gb card. Though I agree with the comments about the speed of the viewfinder in the dark, its shocking, genuinely unusable. This wasnt the case with my previous 2 HTC phones, so I'm really quite suprised by it. Pretty good in the light though, takes a good picture.

I am also not a hugely heavy phone "user" (i.e. I dont sit there playing with them when I'm not doing something practical with it) and I find that my phones battery lasts in the region of 4 days before needing a recharge. Basically as good as the vastly underpowered E650, which I find very impressive.

Orange really need to sort their "unlimited" data package out, but other than that, very impressed.
