loud exhausts

A couple of people have been pulled over recently after the new noise regs came in, ordered to get the car MOT'd again as the Japspeed was too noisy. Both failed the MOT and are having to look at getting it silenced more or replacing it.

I am not a big fan of loud exhausts thats why i was careful when selected in the mongoose for my SX it has a nice burble on idle and crusing speeds so its not too intrusive on the motorway but when you give it some it does sound good but not annoyingly loud.

Sometimes wish my Mongoose was like that.

You wanna find yourself a Fujitsubo RM-01A Mike, I have one on mine, its pretty quiet, but has a nice bassy idle note and sounds good when you give it the beans.

You'd hate living near me. I've had a 1954 Ford Pop with it's original sidevalve engine tuned beyond all proportion with a short side exit exhaust and a single cherry bomb silencer. That was loud enough to wake the dead when it boomed into life. Soon to return to my property is my '67 Anglia with a fairly serious 1700cc and twin Webers. There is nothing you can do to shut that thing up :D

Sorry, some of us just like our noise :D

I thought cherry bombs were banned?

Anyway, punching some holes in the backbox and airbox (or just removing airbox completely and placing something like a pair of tights over the induction er.. hole) will make any car loud.

I think anyone with an excessively loud car looks like a pratt though

But what if you've only got room for a single silencer? And your throttle bodies poke outside the bonnet? :-)

Don't think so, that must be a myth :D

There's quite a big difference in sound between a well spiced engine and a stocker with a hole in the exhaust and no airbox. Most aftermarket exhausts just sound loud to me as well, not really tuned to my ear unless it's got a tubular manifold.

Unless there is a tangible power benefit, and by that I mean a before and after dyno chart, not "it definitely feels faster" then I don't see the point. Usually derestricting an exhaust and ruining the positive resonance characteristics that the manufacturer designed will kill the bottom end or midrange and cause a step in the power. It "feels" faster because of the step, but more often than not it's slower.

If it makes more power everywhere, then fair enough, but please don't drive it on full chat outside my house at 3am, as everyone seems wont to do these days. People don't want to hear it. They simply don't, no matter how good it sounds to you. I might have a fetish for the sound of airhorns, but I wouldn't stick one through your letterbox at 3am and leave it blowing, would I?

Personally I prefer my whisper-quiet V8.

Congratulations on your definition of the word "selfish". The reason is consideration of others..

Not really. I was more refering to the fact the OP seems to be looking down on the on the person for having a cheap car and deemed him/the car not worthy of modifying. It seems it would have been fine if it was a 'good' car...

No its not somthing nice like an MR2 ,I think its an old fiesta .

Obviously sitting on the drive revving it for 10 mins in the middle of the night is just a **** take. If its a common occurance then have a word or call the police.

Everyone else points and laughs.

Ummm. So? lol. That would only be an issue if I suffered low self confidence / esteem.

Dad's student got an ASBO in his 205 for the exhaust being to loud :P

Odd - usually they'd Section 59 him.

And this is my old exhaust:

Fun at idle, when it could make buildings shake, but really annoying on long journeys because it drowned out the stereo. And the noise of nuclear attacks for that matter. Replaced with a rather quieter system these days.

Do people with these exhausts press the clutch in and rev to increase the noise and attract attention or something?

Some tend to make so much noice for only goung about 5-10mph its weird

According to page 3 of this link, an MOT tester now has the right to fail your car due to an aftermarket exhaust system. I don't buy it - how loud is too loud... surely to enforce something like this they need to sound test it at xxxx RPM?

Well if I put the standard cast manifold on my Anglia engine it would probably cough and splutter and not run properly BUT I've had a lot of head work done and a very wild cam. I don't have to rag my engine to make the car go which is most of what you hear out on the street - standard engines with loud exhausts and kids ragging them.

My first car was failed because it was quite simply antisocial sounding. It's not a recent thing, if it's way over-loud and the tester doesn't like it he can fail it.

I don't get how they don't find it embarrassing. If you're driving a proper sports car with a solid V8 engine under the bonnet then great, have an exhaust louder than an atomic bomb. If you're driving a piece of rubbish with a 1.2 litre engine, get a life.

With that level of double standards you should be an mp!

Personally I think it should be illegal to make any modifications to an exhaust system and anyone caught doing so should have their car crushed.I live right beside a main road and I'm sick of hearing poxy imprezas with 5" exhaust going past every 5 minutes while the early hours of the morning.it's anti-social and annoying to people trying to sleep.if enough people say something to the police they will be forced to do something.there's a group on facebook, ban loud exhausts, join it.if I get 10,000 members I will do a letter to the prime minister on the subject.

Had a quick musing around Google and it appears the cherry bomb is outlawed on the fact of it not having any baffles. The exhaust must have a baffle to be conformant, but it's up to the tester/police officer to enforce.

Had one of those on my ITR, fantastic piece of kit and only slightly louder when cruising along but a real nice bark when giving it some beans :)

Neil.

I live right beside a main road in plymouth, a fairly busy road too. I don't really mind the cars with loud exhausts, some of them sound pretty nice. But what does really grind my gears is little scooters. My goodness they make a godawful sound.
