Hey guys,

I just got a B-grade 780i evga board from overclockers!

only the mother board turned up so I have no io plate, not sure how to get one either?

I need to test this board more importantly, I have a cpu that will arrive tommorow.

Whats the best way to test this board? I got a 8800gtx, a cpu, will nick the ram outa of my other system, but cant hook a HD to it,

and will have to try and use my current systems mod power supply to fire it up, is there anything I should be aware of while trying this? it will have to sit on a table while I do fire it up so it can be close to the other case that my psu is sat. and i'll have to try and fiddle it so power switch from my other case is hooked up.

this is my first build but i've stripped and rebuilt my other system that also has a 780i evga board

Im assuming that if I can get it to bios then the thing will work once I get an operating system?
cheers for any help

No need to do that. Just get a flat-headed screwdriver and touch the two pins on the motherboard that you'd plug the case power button connector to and it'll turn on. And yes, its safe to do :)

Yup... it'll run fine without hard disk or optical drive.

OK:p

The good news is that your board is a generic NVidia 780i with an EVGA BIOS, so almost any non-Asus or Gigabyte 780i I/O plate will fit. You easiest option is to contact EVGA in Germany, and they'll almost certainly be able to help you out, or failing that, try that infamous auction site.

Try to isolate the board from the table - it should have come in an antistatic bag, so rest it on that. As stated above, you just need to make momentary contact between the two pins of the power switch to click it on.

I would definitely take the battery out tonight to guarantee you've reset the CMOS too.

Pretty much, yes. Sometimes you can blow fuses on the board for fan headers and USB connectors, but generally, the boards you get from OcUK as B-grade are factory returns from the manufacturer, so they do work.

Cheers guys,

thats put me at ease! Dont know why I didnt think of shorting the power switch, loads less hassle.

great stuff, i'll contact EVGA asap

I have no problem with any motherboards, I was just responding to what I thought was your slight braggadoccio swagger in your post (you did seem very pleased with yourself, I'm sure it was a bargain!), but it wasn't meant disrespectfully or in any way negatively and if I've caused any offence I apologise unreservedly.

No offence taken at all mate, just wasnt sure what you meant! I dont get offended, Certainly not from forums anyway (well rarely :D)

I certainly didn't mean to come across like that I just thought, right get the make and model in 1st. Because if you dont the 1st reply you'll get is what board is it? lol, You know how it can go sometimes.

Anyway it wasn't really a bargain as such, £111 not bad I guess but with nothing at all, not even the north bridge fan  :)
But I got a spare anyway.

Oh and contacted EVGA for an I/O plate, they want £14  postage is £12 lol

Cheers for the replys

excuse my ignorance but what your saying essentially is that a motherboard on a table with the bag under it power supply in and ram and gpu will work safely by shorting the power switch

dont mean to sound stupid just iv got a mobo needs testing and dont want to strip my other pc too much to do so

thx

Well, you'll need the CPU in too, but essentially, yes.

Well the Board works, gets into Bios at any rate!

Went straight to system monitor to see the MCP temps @ 85c and climbing, switched it off at 87, seems like the heat sink was bent away from the board slightly so I bent it a bit and re sat it, temps dropped to 70c and leveled, so not great yet but somewhere handy.

The odd thing I noticed was with the temps for the Cpu? -80c at start rising to - 74c

Dont matter e set bios and its back to normal 35c
