Windows 7 beta - 9th January

because one reason is that the 'naysayers' of vista are saying windows 7 doesn't have the faults of vista. I'm not saying that. In fact I'm totally happy with vista. :)

.I like vista.

This is a progression of vista so if I made a new comp when this is out once out proper I would buy it.

so ive been tagging along liking windows 7 apart from 1 annoying thing now (im probably going to regret this post however)

Does anyone know why wmp wont actually see anything new I add to library folders, or know a way to refresh it so i can see newly added stuff ?

Had my first major problem. Windows locked up completely, no mouse movement, no task manager, nothing.
Rebooted it, but it failed to boot reporting no disk or file system.
Booted off the W7 DVD and used the repair feature. It reported that the MBR was corrupted but failed to repair it.
I reinstalled and it was ok. Annoying, but no real issue.

anyone else having hangs? it's like the machine just locks up, and yet the taskbar/start menu still work fine.. just nothing will launch, even taskman.

I'm thinking it's related to Steam, which'd be a pity, as it's not something I can't use :p

When it happens, my shutdown/log off/reboot takes ~6 minutes :/
Not yet, I did get an Explorer error box pop up after which all the taskbar icons reloaded again and errors when quitting Fallout 3 but I also get those with XP.

Then again we have to remember this is Beta and we are running it to find problems they can fix so actually the more errors we get the better it is :)

Laurence Painell, Microsoft, said the company had been "genuinely surprised" at the number of users wanting to test Windows 7 Beta.

Another comment, "You shouldn't go near it".

Interesting, only issues to date are print spooler, that was the AV software suspicious activity monitor, obviously deemed printing things suspicious...

Trend Internet Security BSOD on shut down, Kapersky OK - with suspicious activity monitor turned off.

i just reported this:

the OS basically crashes. without crashing. (not useful i know)

basically, i can tell with the sidebar. the colours go strange on all the gadgets. at this point. everything i have open doesnt close properly - as in they dissapear but remain in task manager and wont go away. end task, end process tree. task kill with the /f switch. nothing makes them go away.

i then try to reboot and nothing happens apart from it stopping me launching anything new. nothing at all happens and i have to reboot manually. it has never happened without being put in hybrid sleep 1st though. although that may be due to me putting it to sleep instead of powering off.

I like being able to middle click to open taskbar icons in a new window, but what I really want is a quick way to close them! i.e. shift + middle click.

Does anyone know a way to do it?

I don't like the way 'close' is so far away from the taskbar. Well..... about 1 cm :p

It just gets better and better, keep finding new nuggets!

Loving the folder merge - copy a folder with same name onto drive and instead of copy/replace, it politely merges the two - brilliant!

3D pop ups are impressive, better than the vista revolving jobs.

And the spooler problem is fixed in last update!

Ready for release I would say.

Very fast too.

Yup, that always happened to me too. I reported it to MS, but I've gone back to Vista as it made the OS completely unusable - it happened at least three times a night, without the machine going to sleep.

I thought my HDD was dying at first, as I could still open files on my other drives - but nothing on the boot HDD would load correctly.. even explorer failed to load, with the Start Menu claiming that my Control Panel was empty.

I've done my fair share of bug reporting for win7, and now I'll stay away until beta2 :)

Hi Guys sorry i haven't really had the chance to read through the 63 pages of this, but have the gfx tearing issues been resolved yet in w7? or am i just going to have to wait until nvidia or someone else release some drivers?

I loved w7 but had to uninstall it due to my pc being used heavily for gaming and I got horrific gfx tearing as soon as I played any games.
