Q6600 - a bit too hot

At full load with IBT which passed the test

It runs at 73,73,62,62 (these were the max temps)

Thats at 3.2ghz

Is that pushing it?

This is by running the volts at 1.2 (so with a decent cooler should easily be able to do more)

Edit: Strange but my idle temps have now dropped to: 40,40,34,34

That was the point at which I got scared :o with an Arctic 7 Freezer Pro, but go for a noctua if you want better cooling. And that was at 3.5 or something. Should be able to get higher than that if you get decent cooling, then you can up the voltage too. Nice chip btw, even at 3GHz, lowest I can get my vcore is at 1.2875!

Very tempted to try 3.4ghz as the temps dont go up too much, even on full load. Its soooo tempting as the highest ive had a chip before is 3.4ghz dual but only ran that for a while. Mostly stayed at 3.2ghz.

I wish I overclocked my last dual chip more as that idled at 27-30 on stock volts at 3.2ghz

Well I have gone for 3.4ghz and the temps arent any different. At the moment they are on 43,43,36,36.

I havent changed volts, still at stock 1.2.

Why havent the temps gone up?

Well it has passed IBT although it did get a bit high.

Max temps 77,77,65,65 that was only for a few secs at a time. Most 75,75, 63,63.

Now is that safe as I cant have anything that would push my cpu as hard as IBT surely?

77 on Intelburntest is fine and from my experience I don’t know off any other program that heats up a CPU as much IBT.

Thanks. Now the question is...do I try for 3.6ghz lol

I know the chip can do it but its a question of whether my cooler can cope. Overal though I am pleased with the chip. 3.4ghz stable at only 1.2volts.

I think I will wait to see if I can pick up a new cooler before going any further. It runs GTA at 50fps on highest which is fine with me.

Id change the cooler to a TRUE with 2 x 2000rpm fans on it, 3.4ghz @1.2 volts is excellent (i need 1.3750 for 3.4) 3.6ghz should be easy enough with better cooling, maybe even more. I run mine under a TRUE and 2x sharkoon silent eagle 2000's at 3.8ghz, most i ever got under the freezer 7 was 3.4ghz with temps in the mid 70's, looks like a nice chip you got there.:)

Yeah I might just do that when I have a better cooler. Very impressed with it so far.

Keep us updated m8, sounds like youve got a very good cpu (you lucky git lol) i reckon 3.8ghz is very possible on that cpu with good cooling, hence i reccomended the TRUE and 2 x 2000 rpm fans, my own q6600 is a 1.2750 vid chip, does 3.6ghz @1.400 vcore, 3.8ghz at 1.512@load, cooled by a TRUE and 2x2000 rpm fans on the cooler, look forward to seeing how you get on mate.:)

Yeah will definately keep you posted. Desperately looking for a bargain TRUE, hopefully someone upgrades to the newer chips and wants rid of theirs.

Did u buy that cpu on the members market mate, think i seen your name interested in a low vid quad. Obviously youve got a cracking cpu mate, but ditch the arctic freezer, its an ok coloer to about 3.4ghz, and avoid the noctua coolers, theyre ok on a quad to 3.3/4ghz after that your lookng at a lapped TRUE, my q6600 has a vid of 1.2750, i got it up to 3.8ghz on 1.512 @load prime 95 8 hours stable, i reckon your chip could do the same on less volts maybe.:)

Yeah I picked it up on mm. Will definately be getting a TRUE when my pocket recovers from getting the q6600 and 280.

Is the cpu lapped? if so lap the TRUE as well, it makes a lot of difference, i used an arctic freezer 7 on my 1.2750 vid q6600, done 3.0ghz on this voltage, i then jumped to 3.4 @1.3750 vcore, then 3.6ghz@ 1.400 vcore, got bored with 3.4 and decided to go higher, this involved lapping the cpu and TRUE and a vcore of 1.50265 in bios, 1.496 windows idle, 1.526 at p95 100%load, coupled with some chipset voltage tweaking on my asus p45 mobo, runs as stable as can be, its probly the best combo ive ever had, when a noob oc'er like me can do this theres hope for anyone :D, my clocks, all prime stable can be seen here in this thread mate on the last 2 pages.

This is a record of a lot of the quad core overclocks from various oc members, and its a very good read in its own right, to give an idication of quad overclocking:)

Yeah it is lapped. And will do the same to the TRUE when I get one. You have made me want one even more now lol

Good luck mate, hope it goes ok, look forward to seeing how you get on:)

Well I took the plung and got a true with the noc fan (only one at the moment)

I am now getting idle temps of 37,37,34,34

Was getting 42, 42, 36, 36

I am not overclocking as I am going to wait for the paste to settle in but it has dropped as much as I would have liked.

I might have to re apply the paste as it slipped and slided every where when I was trying to put it on. That can wait for the extra fan tho.

I did have huge problems with the size of the cooler tho, it is huge! And had to remove one of my case fans in the side but I had a top mount so just moved it there.

Not looking forward to adding another fan tho as it was a right bugger to get on, even now it isnt completely on right but it is secure enough lol

I will let you know in a few days how the clocking temps go, how long should I wait, 72hrs?

yea those connector pins are horrible, i had to put so much pressure to get them in, after one or two had been put in the others popped back out lol.. was very stressful!
