PS3 price rise?

Unlike most consumer electronics, the PS3 itself isn't where the profit comes from; it's the games that make the money.

While things like televisions are a one off sale and therefore need to make the most of that profit margin, the PS3 needs to get into peoples' houses so Sony can bring in the profit from games and therefore that profit margin isn't so important. It has been sold at a loss since release (may just about be breaking even now) so i don't see how continuing to sell it at a loss for a while longer will be impossible.

It may put back the price drop, but i very much doubt we'll see a price rise.

I think the most likely scenario is they'll sweeten the price by including more stuff, an extra couple of games, an HDMI lead, a Bluetooth Remote, stuff like that.

Nowhere near.

I mean on a per-unit basis. Last i heard when they introduced the 80gig they were losing around £15 per unit, i don't find it unfeasible that production costs have fallen by that amount since then.

Overall they've lost millions, especially if you take R&D into account.

Sony missed the boat they have had the PS3 far to high for to long, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last Console from Sony or the very least the PS4 will not be out for another 4-5 years.

Trouble is people bought it for Blu Ray. Some people have two consoles PS3 for movies and Xbox for games...... despite Microsoft charging to play online

Sony still make some money out of blu-ray sales being part owner of the technology and a publisher. It's one of the main reasons they went with blu-ray in the PS3; get players in the home to make it more likely blu-ray would succeed over HD-DVD.

The PS4 wasnt planned for release until 2013 anyway(which has been stated by Sony several times)

the economic climate will kill off the PS3 if anything - not in particular the high cost, which I personally think was the right thing to do at the time of release (include the BR drive and the cell cpu)

Everyone's vision is 20:20 in hindsight

No chance it will rise - at worst the predicted price drop wont happen - probably would be sensible for them to streamline their product range again...

ps3ud0

Old news from last year it will only affect some of the TV and Camera business, the PS3 is not included in this at all.

As is the case with many technology companies, Sony has not been experiencing much joy during recent months, with huge drops in profits reported throughout the year. And, when you are not making enough sales, there is sometimes only one solution which can help a company to recoup the lost profits: raising the prices.

Thus, it was announced recently that Sony is now planning to increase the prices of a number of its products, with its decision currently being influenced by the rapidly weakening pound against the euro and the Japanese yen.

A statement from the company was released, saying that “it is likely that the vast majority of products affected will see increases of significantly less than 33 per cent", which was a relief in some quarters, even though 33 per cent seems quite a considerable rise.

However, according to Play.tm, it seems that Sony is determined to keep at least one group of shoppers happy, since the company also announced that it has no plans to increase the price of the PS3 console. This is not just down to the good nature of the board though. Rather, it has far more to do with the battle currently being waged against the Xbox 360.

At the same time as this news was announced, rumours started circling that the PS3 was actually in line for a price cut in March 2009. D+Pad, the online magazine, was apparently informed of this from a company insider, but Sony has been quick to play down this rumour and has stated that it is not about to make the PS3 more competitive in 2009.
