Hey all,

Thought I'd throw up a quick poll, as I'd like to know your opinion...

When you turn off your TV - do you leave it on Standby or do you turn it off at the mains?

Some TVs have an electrical on/off switch - therefore when you turn it off at the switch, it goes into Standby instead of turning it completely off. Do you choose to turn it off at the mains?

Is the energy used to power the device so you could just use your remote to turn it on, enough to worry about?

On your 360 - do you leave it in the mains socket (I.e. the power block stays lit all the time) or do you choose to turn it off at the mains?

And with your PS3 - do you leave the red light on or do you switch the switch behind it?

I'd just like to know your opinion on this - it seems when I ask people, some people say that the energy is so little you need not worry about it, and so they keep their devices on standby, however some decide to turn it off at the plug.

Thanks :)

Marky

Title: How do you Power Off?

Option 1: Leave on Standby
Option 2: Turn Off at the Mains

My old Samsung LCD only went on standby, but my PX80 has an off button that turns it off completely without going to the mains which is handy.

I have RF controlled remote sockets which each have a multigang off them, this switches off my monitors, speakers and everything else which doesnt cause a problem to the pc if it just disappears.

Generally standby

Use these too... when I remember :o

Have a remote control to operate the RF switches on the sockets for on and off with the mains. I just hardly remember to turn them off.

Then when I do remember to turn them off, I can't work out why the TV/PS3/Xbox wont turn on :o

I turn everything off now. It saves me approximately 240w/day, which isn't a lot, but it adds up.

Though in reality it only saves me about £1/month.

Just into standby, the plugs to my TV and AV kit are behind the TV stand and its a right royal pain trying to get behind, also my SkyHD box is connected to the same set of plugs and that needs to be plugged in for anytime.

my old pioneer plasma goes on standby, the manual recommends so and it uses a puny amount of juice..

Off at the plugs, although after reading the above I might not bother...

Saying that all in all 9 plugs are behind the HDTV and almost all are on Standby unless physically unplugged...I feel I'm doing my bit for the planet!

Damn I need to get out more!

If you value your equipment you are much better off leaving it in standby.

The power draw of (some) standby devices is low not to make much difference in cost savings but it's not just about the cash savings.

Repeated switching on and off electrical devices will break them sooner rather than later. They don't like cold starts as this stresses powersupply components and ultimately will lead to failure.

It's the same with a car. Do you turn your engine off at every red light? I mean, you will save a few pounds over a year in petrol costs but are you happy cranking the engine many more times a year?

You have to weigh up the standby savings and the cost of buying new. If you have an el cheapo freeview box which is drawing £22 a year in standby, but only costs £17.50 for a new one then turn it off everynight - even if you have to buy a new one every year you will be £4.50 a year better off!

But if you have an old faithfull TV / monitor which has a low standby draw and would cost hundreds to replace then leave it in standby.

standby for me, apart from my PS3, which is now curiously off?? guess I don't play it that much lol

Anybody else sleep their machine?

Turned off at the mains. Reason?

I used to work as a Manager for a small independent electrical retailer near to where I live. I heard from another shop Manager (now a mate of mine) got a complaint from a customer who'd left his TV on standby all night & it caught fire! Luckily he managed to put the fire out but needless to say he wasn't happy.

Since then all my gear is turned off when I'm not using it.

bit of an extreme case tho, must have been something wrong with it to cause it to catch fire in the first place..

There was something wrong with it - it had the name **** on the front of the TV! EDIT IIRC it was a cheapo noname portable.

All this talk of standby using a significant amount of power is utter rubbish and scaremongering. Even my eight year old Sony CRT used only 1W on standby.
