GTX 280 "Squealing" in games...

Probably is the card, both my 8800GTX, 8800GT and GTX280 all do it when I get high framerates (1000+), GTX280 to a lesser degree but it's still there..

Got the same problem with my new GTX 280 - thing is the same thing happened with my last 8800 GTX as well - yet the 4870's never had the problem. So is it certainly a PSU issue? My PSU is a Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 1000W

Just thought I would reply to my original post - Found out I hadn't put in the 1000W dark power pro and still had the 750w one in. I swapped them over and the squeal has vanished! Defiantly the PSU causing it.

First thing I did with my leadtek gtx280 was to run 3d mark 2001 and I get the squeal ascociated with very high frame rates in that, so it looks like it is frame rate related. I don't get as much if at all in 3d marks 03,05 and 06. This is with an Antec NeoHE 550W psu.

I am getting this with my leadtek GTX280 in vista aero test and the loading screens of the 3d Mark06 test. Got a Corsair TX 650w PSU, I thinkg the noise is comming form the graphics card hard to be sure though. If it starts doing this in games I am going to RMA the card because the noise is seriously anoying.

To those suggesting the use of vsync.....I already mentioned this to the OP, and from what he reports, there is something more going on here than "fast output squeal".

Fast output squeal being what WE're talking about when we advise vsync. That being a squeal that only shows up when the card is pumping out $STUPID-FPS, even if not fully loaded due to other bottlenecks. It is entirely unrelated to load on the GPU, because you can FRY it with furmark with massive res and multisampling, and it'll be quiet as a lamb, doing 30fps, even though the GPU and Vram are probably glowing. Whereas, run furmark at 640x480 with no multisample....it'll shoot up into the 100's of FPS....and squeal it's little heart out.

(using furmark only as an example, I cannot remember if it does indeed vary enough from high spec to low spec to replicate the behaviour mentioned, but certainly other apps do. Crysis' intro screen is a serious squealer as it seems to pull about 3 trillion fps, and if memory serves, it ignores the vsync setting.

The OP defo has something more going on. But it's always worth re-iterating the vsync cure for the high-fps squeal, because SOMEONE must use the search facility now and then :P

Hi guys..

I've just built a new i7 system, and I'm having the same squealing problem many seem to be having here.

It's 100% coming from the PSU, and only kicks in when the graphics card is put to use.

This clip shows exactly the problem I'm having, albeit with different components:

We're not talking about a barely audible whine, but something that can clearly be heard over the fans etc the other side of the room. I don't for one second believe this is supposed to be like this.

For what it's worth, I have a P6T Deluxe, BFG 285, and Coolermaster M700 PSU.

Edit: And another which sums my thoughts up exactly:

i used to get this on my brand new 8800gt less then a year ago, funny enough the problem went for me when i upgraded my psu.

If you have a spare lying around you could try it, my last psu was a cheap 650w atrix, as soon as i got the ocz gamexstream 700w from here no more squealing, as if the last psu wasnt drawing enough power from it.

Another quick idea, you most likely have it all connected properly, but if you get the pci-e power connectors in wrong (not all the way in) or are missing them completely (wouldnt boot either) this could also cause squeeking.

And then as previously mentioned could be the coils vibrating.

My first mobo for my current build last year, an Asus Maximus Formula had an issue with buzzing from the motherboard rather than the GFX. When I changed to my current PSU (see sig.) and also a cheap Hiper psu to test the mobo the noise went away. At the time my VGA card was an 8800 GTS, I have recently gone up to a GTX 280 and get no squeal at all.

I HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH GTX260 PALIT 216SP!

Squealing was loud during gameplay, aspecially on Crysis and modern high end games!

I RMA'd this card as it was annoying and for price i expect quality!

now enjoying my 4870 :)

Same for me. Did an upgrade a while back to a BFG8800 series card and the squealing drove me mad. Sent the card back to be checked but they said the sound was "normal" for Nvidia cards. Did a bit of research on the Net and that did indeed turn out to be the case. Shame, as I'd been buying Nvidia cards for years.

I waited awhile and then eventually went for a 4870. No squealing whatsoever.

I may go back to the green team in the future, but not until their newer cards (late 2009) have been out for at least 3-6 months and people have confirmed that NV have finally fixed their squealing issues.

Nomadd

Just tried my new GTX285 rig today and I'm annoyed to find the card squeals.

It's not a cheap PSU either, it's an 850W Zalman.

I'll do a bit more testing and find out whether it's the PSU or the card squealing.

I used this calc: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp, and my score came to under 400w. 371w to be exact. I don't really have a very heavily loaded system. 1 hard drive, a couple of fans, don't even have an internal rom drive.

Just used that and it recommends 1010w :S im using 700w :P that was overclocked of course ;)

ah i just realised id selected quad sockets for cpu, oops, down to 500 thats more like it :)

This happens on my Leadtek GTX280. It's the first graphics card I've noticed it on dating back over 10 years, including a Leadtek 6800GT.

I did read something on here a while back about how someone changed their PC and the squealing went away. I wouldn't bank on it though, I replaced by PSU (for other reasons) and it remains.
