Been running two of these 36GB raptors in RAID-0 for years now but i need more space (damn FSX).

Now i like my RAID-0 setup but ive not kept up todate on HDD's in ages so not sure what to get.

2x500GB sounds nice but performace wise i may be worse off.

Any good drives with fast access times.
2xdrives for the RAID-0
£180 budget

For that moola I'd go for 2 x 1TB Samsung Spinoint F1s for about £160 give or take. Very fast, though not sure if It'd match two raptors speed wise. The difference would hardly be epic.

Or single SSD?

I'll let you know tomorrow hopefully how the single platter 500gb 7200.12's perform, two of those in Raid-0 should be nice, somehow they have very nice sustained write speeds on them.

The 1TB Samsungs have some mighty data density, therfore high data throughput. Can't say I know the access times of the top of my head tho

SAS HDD on SATA? ...some of those are 1500RPM.

SATA drives work on a SAS controller, but SAS drives won't work on a SATA controller. Therefore he'd need a SAS controller as well which is probably going to be more than £180 on its own :)
