A day out ratting

Hare coursing?....

I have no problem with killing animals for food (hunting and shoots) but I do have a problem with killing things for mindless fun and "pest" control. Where was that, it looked like a bit of wasteland and as such I can't see how the rats are causing trouble and so they aren't vermin in my eyes. If on the other hand they are next to a farm and causing trouble with crops then a shotgun would be fine.

As stated several times now, that "waste ground" is the far end of a shoot (i.e. land set aside for rearing game birds). The long grass-like stuff you see is maize and sweetcorn, which the rats infest. They destroy it, eat it all, and spread disease and destruction amongst the pheasant poults.

Hare coursing is now against the law in the UK, so I don't do it here obviously. I was talking about rabbits. Either way they get eaten by me, the dogs and the ferrets. Without "pest" control where would humankind be? Do you really fancy another dose of the black death? Leptospirosis?

in cornwall my cat keeps killing those little shrew things and bringing them back also a Rabbit but that survived so we nursed it back and released it im not into killing things that dont have much chance of fighting back that would feel a bit empty to me , maybe a fox that had torn all my chickens to bits , didnt rats get blamed for the bubonic plauge when it was da fleas (or did i dream this)

Fleas were to blame, the rats were just the carriers;).

Yes, and it was the flea of the Black Rat (Rattus rattus) not the Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus). The Brown has rather displaced the old native Black nowadays.

wasn't it the European black rats with the flees, then the British brown rats killed em off, and the fleas (or the virus i forget) couldn't live in/on the brown rats blood? so the plague died down a bit (remembering from primary school here :p)

But once again, you fail to see that there IS a point to it. A very big one. But if you want to push for an answer, then it'll be a 'yes'.

Ah that makes me a townie then, all those years on a farm count for nothing it seems. Oh and I guess I better hate my Dad and Uncle as they both had shotguns to shoot things, my uncle still goes to shoots.

The difference is one is humane and the other for food, yours is for pleasure and could easily be done humanely.

Tefal me old mucker you were beaten by.... a country mile? ;)

I dont have a problem with it tbh, not as if theres a shortage of rats or anything.. id give it a whirl if i had some dogs like that lol

Ok so you have a valid excuse for getting the rats in those cases, but I still disagree with your methods, even if you think it is fine.

As for hare coursing, just checking, you wouldn't want to get caught by an amateur photgrapher if you were (see the photog forum).

Lovely. Couldn't care less about the sport as they're vermin but how the hell is that picture of a rat being torn in half anywhere near "family friendly" I suspect the only reason the thread isn't going anywhere as those "higher" up obviously favour this "sport"

I for one welcome our new animal bashing overlords... :D

Reasons I do it...

1. It's good exercise for the dogs and it is primarily what they were bred for. It's also good training for them.
removed....
3. It's a good day out for us. Certainly beats browsing the internet.
4. It's awesome fun!

Those are really crappy excuses you know...

However I live on a farm and fully understand pest control is required, however if this was not explicitly asked for by the landowner then you ARE just doing it for kicks. Which I think is pretty sick.

The rats have moved into a niche in the world that has allowed them to breed well.
I wish more effort was put in by US to PREVENT that niche from occurring then we wouldn't actually have to go battering rats over the head with shovels...

Heres my baby patch with a rat he got in the field next to our property.
