Why does the UK grind to a halt with a little snow?

LOL at bank holidays being included in your holiday allowance. What a scam!

To me, holidays = personal holidays, not a day off that you share with the rest of the nation.

Because we get snow so rarely people aren't used to or prepared for it, because it's false economy to own snow tyres etc for the one time in every 4-5 years when they might be useful.

This is exactly it. As someone who lived in Munich for 5 years where the winters are really bad I know how much better winter tyres are in the snow. It's actually illegal to have summer tyres in the winter they are that dangerous.

Today there are two cars are completely stuck in our cul de sac alone, I'm working from home as both cars are powerful RWD BMWs.

Just because a few heroes here have made it in doesn't mean it's possible in the conditions for everyone. There are far worse conditions in some places than others.

WOW. That is crazy, didn't think it was that deep everywere else. There was probably about an inchs worth on my car this morning. Main roads were snowless.

Oh right, yeah I get bank holidays off as well.

I just read this though:

So will we see an increase?

Umm, looking at your previous post, if you have 20 days of holiday including three for xmas then taking out the two bank holidays (xmas day and boxing day) I think you currently get 26 days worth of holiday. (Apparently there are 8 UK bank holidays not 10). So yes, from 1 April you should get an extra 2 days of holiday. I think...

Yeah its amazing what little things can bring this country down lol, i mean look at the railways, couple of leaves on the lines and were ******, have to shut them down for weeks till the ***** blow off, what a joke we are, if we have another war im off, as god knows how were gona cope, if we cant deal with a few leaves, or a bit of snow, then theres no way were gona be able to cope with a war. :D

LOL at all the people moaning who are probably the suckers who went to work this morning. No buses or trains here this morning so my wife who works 10miles away is enjoying her paid day off

I have yet to be out of the house, i slept through ICT by accident (tired last night, didn't set alarm and slept for 14 hours), just text a mate and he says everythings normal in swindon. Snow aint that bad, couple inches at most.
If its deeper I can see why buses would be taken off the road, no seatbelts, if the bus has a bad crash they may get sued. I would assume anyway.

I dont particularly get why the tube is being badly affected, unless they're talking about the overground parts...

It is mainly the overground parts which are affected, but the trains can't easily change direction when they're underground as most of the major terminus are above ground. For Picaddilly in the north it's Arnos Grove and Cockfosters, so when you suddenly take out one of them the trains start backing up and you get severe delays. I seem to remember reading someone posting about the tube stopping was because the live rail was covered in snow and it's higher than the normal rails. Result? Train might lose connection and stall (which incidently I think happened this morning resulting in Arnos Grove -> Cockfosters closing).]

Does annoy me when people moan we come to a complete standstill because the UK is useless, as has been said many times we're just not prepared for it. Simple as, and it would be false economy to pump money into events which don't occur for many years.

i think some people think we should be spending 100's of millions a year just incase we get a once in 18 year snow storm.

Snowing nicely in bristol now might have to go home soon if it gets much worse :D.

Pmsl, just thought, if were in a war, they shouldn't bother sending troops, firing milssiles, or dropping bombs on us etc...., they should just do what the Australians and Americans do when they get them big bush fires, just send waves of helicopters over us, but carrying snow and leaves instead of water, and dropping that on to us.

WE SURRENDER, WE SURRENDER!!!!

:D :D :D :D

Slightly off topic but the leaves on the line thing is a serious issue that has only really been one in modern times. The problem is modern trains use disk brakes like a car so leaves can build up bettween the weels and the track letting the train skid when braking which is obviously potentially pretty leathal. In the good old days we had brakes actually on the running wheels so it stripped any leaves or other crap off.

Lol yeah!:D

Not all people are using it as an excuse

Also even if you get in, will you be able to get out latter??

Yes and if not my company will put me in a hotel to thank me for making the effort. I'm not saying it's possible for everyone to make it in, I'm saying people who live within 5 miles of work still use it as an excuse.

As I said my mrs boss works 4 miles from work and travels the clear roads I already used this morning, yet somehow he's 'snowed in'.

I understand villages and the country is harder going but these people are just commuting across cambridge, which this morning when I left for work was just about clear.
