Cheaper to buy a PS3 in the long run?

Bar buying an Arcade version it seems that it's cheaper to get a PS3 (standalone) than a 360 Premium/Elite (standalone) by the time you have got a additional wireless adapter, 12M gold membership and blu-ray drive (when released), my mate has just got an Elite & wireless adapter upgrading from a 1st gen 360, I being a PS3 owner was annoyed he didnt get a PS3, when already having a 360, he says he would have but for the expense of the PS3, but trying to convince him it would be better in the long run was a dead end!

Am I alone in thinking this?

If all the extras you listed are wanted then i guess a PS3 is cheaper, but by getting a 360 then gradually adding stuff such as wifi adaptor its cost is spread over a longer period of time.

I don't really understand the thought process behind totaling up each individual feature, then whichever is cheapest wins.

If the choice has to be made for one or the other, what's wrong with just deciding which has the features you want + which current/future games appeal to you?

I guess it makes no difference in this case, if someone is simply looking for which system actually costs less to take home and start playing straight away, the 360 is cheaper.

As many have said, it depends entirely on the user. If someone wants to only play games then the 360 is most likely the best financial decision.

360 has better games support right now but the PS3 is starting to get games like Killzone2 so you will probably find long term PS3 is going to get stronger but right now the 360 is just unbeatable for games support. I have both and thats the best way to go about things right now.

why does everyone always use the blue-ray & wireless argument for buying a PS3

Personally i will only buy a blue-ray player if it becomes the only format available, and DVD is no longer around... but by then there may be another format doing the rounds

My Xbox is cabled to my router, so no need for wireless.

Yes the PS3 can do more, but at the end of the day i bought my Xbox360 to be a games console.. nothing more, nothing less... and this is what it does

Its down to personal preference. Lets face it, one or the other is only gonna cost you an extra £20-£30 than the other (with you adding all the accessories on).

I personally, prefer the 360. I purchased a PS3 2 weeks ago, this weekend I sold it, main reason is that (for me) the 360 beats it hands down, regardless if the 360 does not have blu-ray, and regardless if I have to spend a little bit more for the extras, that come with the PS3.

i wanted a PS3 but couldnt justyfy the cost, i managed to get :

a NEW Xbox 360 60GB, 3 Games and 2 Controllers for £175 on the high street...

then i have now spent a total of £300 and have :

an xbox 360, 2 controllers, 2 Guitars, and 18 games.

granted i bought most of the games 2nd hand, but i dont see an issue with that, and have the likes of : Guitar hero world tour, Guitar hero 3, Fifa 09, COD: WAW ect

the deals just seem to be around for the 360, i wanted a ps3, but my head told me no, besides i think the pads a lot better for FPS games and i would pay for XBL as i think it is pretty decent, and prefer it greatly over PSN

Good way of putting it.
It's also not necessary to buy a Wi-Fi adapter, nor do you need Xbox Live gold, nor a Blu-Ray drives (though this won't be released), so it removes the need for bloat or paying for things the consumer doesn't need. It's also cheaper to get the Pro over the Elite, the Elite is over priced.

So how is the old record player doing these days? Ever thought of moving up to tape or god forbid digital music? ;)

ps3ud0

Because they are valid arguments for some people. Personally I doubt I'll buy another action film on DVD after my experiences with bluray.

My Xbox is cabled to my router, so no need for wireless.

I usually have my PS3 and both my Xboxs connected over LAN, but WLAN is nice to have on the PS3 if I decide to use it on another TV.

Good for you? I bought my Xbox as a games console, and my PS3 as a games console, with great media capabilities. Both do what I bought them for.

If stuffs not valid for you, doesn't mean it won't be for the next person.

It depends on your needs. And that's where it ends.

If I had the money again I would buy a Playstation 3. I've had both a Premium and Elite and I just prefer the PS3 by a long way. Others will prefer their Xbox 360 for different reasons.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't splurged into a whinge-fest yet but tick off what you need and how much you've got and it's an easy decision to make as both are very good for their own reasons as well as gaming.

Personally, i think all of that is up for debate.

Well said tbh.

Don't worry about the money factor, do what you want or feel is the best decision.

Go for the console you prefer, everyone has one. Mine is the 360, but doesnt mean the PS3 isnt a good console.
