Police and taking details...

well me and the missus had problems with the police once lets just say they where a bunch of unprofesional twts and if you where in the same postion u would all say the same.

I tried to tell them who i was, where i lived & what i was doing, even showed them proof.

Its anoying, i'm no 17 year old wanna be gangster hanging around the streets. I thought being mid 20's these things wouldn't happen any more.

The fact that they abused their power and took my details peeves me off. I am considering complaining but i know that the complaint wouldn't come to anything, obviously. So no point really.

The most annoying thing is i try and help the police out as much as i can and always ring them when i see something dodgy going on. Maybe i wont bother anymore...

Well, its not like your details are a secret, your information is on the DVLA already, he didn't touch you or arrest you, get over it.

Hooray for New Labour and their tyrannical laws. I'm glad that everyone is enjoying seeing their freedom slowly vanishing.

What happened to you is a complete joke. You had and have no rights unfortunately and they basically just did what they wanted. Despite the fact that they had no reason to stop and question you in this manner. Nor can you do anything against the way they treated you.
You were made out to be a criminal when you were doing absolutely nothing. You were polite with them. You offered them your help and cooperated. Yet they still can and will do this. I can hardly believe this happened to someone in your situation. You waited for a car before crossing the road yet they treat you as though you were a drug dealer or something.
Sorry to hear about the experience mate, I'd be pretty peeved about it too. Despite the fact that it was the police etc and that it's not really a big deal what went on (ie. it all came to nothing and was not a serious situation).

It's the principle that gets me annoyed tbh.

Well, as i already said, if you bother to read the thread;

I know it really doesn't matter either way and my life won't end but surely they need my permission to do so?

Am i not allowed to be peeved that the police abused their powers and left me in the freezing cold for no reason?

Of course you'd be happy for that to happen because your a super tough real 'internetz' man of course. Highly trained in keyboard warrior techniques.

yeah i had a similar situation although admittedly I was lippy back to them but wasnt offensive or anything just asked them to explain the reasonings to me(which they didnt take kindly too), they just do it to annoy people and to show that "they are boss" and to up their stats probably, if you havent done anything wrong(like i hadnt) its easier just to comply cos they'll go on their high horse on you.. OP as someone else said just let it go, not worth the hassle.

You don't have to give them any personal details at all, just tell them why you're where you are and that's all. It's called a "Stop & Account", after which you should get a card telling you who stopped and asked you.

I get stopped every 6 or 12 months on average, although only ever when I'm walking alone after midnight (usually 2 or 3am). I guess I look fairly dodgy to be fair. The officers are usually polite, but not always. I refused to give my details once (I had been stopped a couple of weeks earlier and was in a bad mood). For refusing I got pinned against the car and forcibly searched.

I've never been given a card or anything like that (or even an apology), so I'm not sure what the point of that law is exactly.

Summed it up brilliantly there mate. Spot on.

Personally, I agree it was a silly thing to stop someone for. However, police officers are required to look out for people who they THINK are acting in a suspicious manor, which in this case the officer believed the OP was. Whether or not the OP was acting suspiciously is up to the officer. The officer is required to fill out a form when we stop someone so there's a record of that stop, it justifies our actions. You don't have to give your name and address, the officer shouldn't have forced them details out of you. I personally would rather be stopped by a policeman for acting suspiciously than have a policeman walk/drive past without wondering what I was doing :). Most of the time stop & accounts are made for innocent people but sometimes you notice a pattern and they can lead to something.

Thats the problem, if you refuse (even though you are innocent) you are treated as a criminal.

What ever happened to being innocent untill proven guilty?

I failed to see what did the police do that made some people in this thread so offended?

They saw someone standing in the cold at night smoking, ask said person a couple of questions.

Now, is it that offensive to even ask you who you are and where you live? What are they supposed to ask instead, nice weather? What did you have for tea perhaps?

Since when did the police doing their job deserved being called names and since when asking a few questions violating your rights?

The OP didn't have a sign that says "Angel" on his forehead, any criminal could and would said the same thing "I live around the corner", and his driving licence proved OP right, taking down his details is merely to put it in his report after his patrol, and should any crimes being committed tonight in the area, he would have a contact or even possible suspect.

But its what they consider suspicious is whats stupid.. guys smoking on street "quick question him and get his details"

But their actions were unjustifyable in the first place.

So can can you justify actions that were not justified in the first place?

He didn't put you behind bars, cuff you, or take you down to the station for questioning. You are back at home 2 mins later in front of the PC, at which point were you guilty ?

Similar thing happened to me a year or so ago. I just stepped off the bus from work and the police said i matched the description of someone in the area. I was a bit annoyed they could take my details, but decided it would be less hassle for everyone if i just complied. Plus i dont really wanna slow down their search.

As far as im aware if you dont comply with them then they can take you to the station and it just gets drawn out and drawn out.

That is a silly thing to be stopped for. However, if he had been lingering on the corner for 5-10 minutes that could been seen as suspicious behaviour. Sure, he may just be waiting for his friend to arrive but then again he may not. The officer doesn't know till he asks. Then you can see what kind of person they are :).

But their actions were unjustifyable in the first place.

So can can you justify actions that were not justified in the first place?

Suspected anti-social behaviour (drug dealing) in the OPs circumstance would be the one I'd select. Then again, I wouldn't have stopped the OP personally as his behaviour wouldn't have struck me as suspicious.

I have no problem with them asking me what i am doing. I told them, showed them proof, and rather than them saying "ok then mate, sorry for bothering you", they take my ID, without my permission and take my details.
