I'm not sure how many black folk we have in this thread, but surely you can't say "it isn't offensive" if it isn't targeted at you?

Also I don't think many of us would get away with describing a black person as a golliwog at work - it is unprofessional and rather stupid.

And finally, just because a white person says "BUT OUR KIDS PLAYED WITH GOLLIWOGS WHATS THE PROBLEM" doesn't mean that the concept isn't offensive to someone who is, in fact, black.

The best bit about this whole story is the lawyer's hair in the BBC video.

What the hell is going on there?! :p

True.

I don't understand the anger people show at these terms coming under condemnation under public scrutiny. Fact is, it was intended for a private conversation and shouldn't have been leaked. But then, that doesn't say much for the company this woman keeps or she was just being thick and speaking too loudly.

But it was leaked; what is the BBC supposed to do? They can't win, because if they do nothing they will upset certain people and they react, other people come down on them with "omfg, PC takin over my lives".

It sounds to me like she made an ill judged racist remark, and the staff she works with complained. Not sacking material in itself.

That she then refused to apologise or even recognise the problem is what makes her a liability. The BBC got it right.

I agree with everything you say - except the implication that there is such a thing as a 'well judged racist remark'.

Why are people claiming it's "PC gone mad etc etc"

It's an offensive word aimed at a race, hence racism. There is no "comedy" element to it.

Hmm... perhaps not the best choice of words. What I meant was in contrast to a maliciously racist remark. I think her comment was thoughtless and racist rather than intended to demean and offend. Clueless rather than nasty.

its definately not this guy... (Gaël Monfils)

*Funny images*

what?

:D:D Hahaha that did make me laugh though.

I remember the originals on the robertsons jam jars, collecting stamps. I had a few badges of them too, can't remember what I did with them

sorry but im pretty sure you could have a white guy look lke a golliwog too (some facial features / hair etc).

would it be offensive then??

this is quite frankly a load of old ********.

i believe if she felt she had done wrong she would have apologised straight away.

ive heard some black people have common sense and also see this is ********.

and i think anybody offended by it must be retarded tbh.

isnt it rumoured that she was talking about andy murray and his hair?

so someone looks like a golliwog to her, given that golliwogs arent imaginary things, i don't see the issue.
