A day out ratting

I don't see the problem with this, rats are rats, rats are vermin. This is a way to control them, no worse than any other way they get killed in the wild. Im sure cats and birds of prey get at them much the same way.

Really? I'd think most forms of predation are better than poisons. Oh, and glue traps.

How is replacing dogs with another animal better anyway? The dog will break the rats neck very quickly in most cases, a bird of prey would wound the rat with its talons and probably not kill it fast, and a snake would suffocate it by eating it, or crush it, or inject a paralysing poison and so on and so forth.

I didn't say it was better. I just used it as another alternative.

Not that I disagree with the use of dogs anyway. So all this is pretty moot anyway.

Shooting, whilst fun, is too noisy to be effective. Smoke and dogs works better than anything.

I know YOU know this Spie, but for the benefit of others... Don't forget shooting can't always be used anyway. Within the vicinity of buildings, stock, or public highways it's simply impossible to carry out safely or legally. So once you have rats immune to poison (or simply don't wish them to suffer that way), you can either let them over-run you, or unleash the hounds :D

Some of the replies and tired rantings in this thread have made me want to get a terrier and go ratting, then post up here.

Mature ? Not in the slightest, but I would be able to thank those for going on and on and on for introducing me to it.

Can't some people just let it rest rather than arguing and trying to use pointless examples to argue. It reminds of the clueless people in Ramsays British Kitchen Nightmares trying to tell him how amazing their restaurant is whilst tens of thousands into debt ;)

You criticised the OP hence you were asked for alternative methods of control. Now it appears we agree his method is the most effective. So what's the problem?

I never criticised the OPs method. Read through my posts, in fact my first one highlighted that terriers are not a bad method.

I just questioned the morality of "enjoying" a kill. That doesn't mean I'm criticising the method used. Perhaps you're getting me mixed up with some of the others on the thread. I don't personally find killing rats enjoyable and I think finding pleasure in it is morally questionable, but hey, that's just me. Forgive my empathy.

Probably my final word on this. I've bought a reasonable amount of kit from OCUK over the years but I am uncomfortable with idea that images such as those by the OP are considered acceptable. I guess I can make an economic choice now and just buy from another site that has posting policies that prevent people from showcasing their "hobbies" when those "hobbies" are clearly going to offend a lot of people. Its a tricky one.

You're considering withdrawing your business from the best tech retailer in the UK, because I posted some ratting pics on their forum? haha

Aaaand toys are thrown out of the pram :D

This thread just keeps getting better and better. Carry on people!

Can't be bothered with the pedant. His attempts at trolling are becoming more and more pathetic.

So it's trolling now is it? Where exactly am I wrong with my statement toward your "animal lover" and "animal rights" blabble?

You're like the vegetarian who doesn't consider fish as meat, and eats it.

Well don't come back then. This forum has it's rules and you have obviously lived with them quite happily for the time you have been here. Nothing been broken here, if yo don't like the pics you could have saved all this by just clicking the 'Back button' ;)

I suggest those opposing pest control and hunting go get themselves an education in Biological Science. Once you have a grasp of animal behaviour, cellular biology/neuroscience/pharmacology (in specific reference to pain and fear), evolution, human nutrition and physiology; I dare you to make the same arguements.

I don't think anyone opposes pest control here.

And you are a pedant troll who can't help himself. The thread is made and it's been discussed to the hilt.

Get over it and stop provoking people.

I'm sorry if you're upset that I pointed out the inconsistencies to your animal lover and rights statement. You don't count as more than one person, and then again, you're only provoking yourself because you managed to contradict yourself, and angry because someone pointed it out.

Look, I'm not biting no matter how hard you try. I just like to feed the trolls from time to time.

You like that don't you troll? Theeereee's a goood boooy! Yes he is!! Yes he is a good bwoy!

It was an inference and you will also have noted then that I apologized. What I have written on this subject is in no way emotive and is based on fact and reasoned argument. That is something that is not prevalent in many of the posts in this thread. I make no apologies for dismissing idiots that storm in with banal arguments on a subject that clearly is important to a lot of people. Regardless of what side of the fence they sit. I have a degreee in Biology and I understadn the realities of the foodchain and pest control. My argument (yet again) and the argument of many others is that tearing an animal to bits and then posting it on a forum like this is unsound. Hunt for food and pest control by all means, but do it with some consideration.
