Virgin media is pure awesomeness !!!

What sort of game pings are you all getting with VM cable ?

In the 5 years I've been with them generally always < 20.

Code:
Seq	Address	RX Bytes	TTL	RTT (ms)	+/- (ms)
0	multiplay.co.uk (85.236.96.22)	64	120	18.58
1	multiplay.co.uk (85.236.96.22)	64	120	18.23	-0.35
2	multiplay.co.uk (85.236.96.22)	64	120	18.87	0.64
3	multiplay.co.uk (85.236.96.22)	64	120	18.17	-0.70
4	multiplay.co.uk (85.236.96.22)	64	120	17.34	-0.83

Round-Trip: 17.339 min, 18.235 avg, 18.866 max (ms)
   Packets: 5 transmitted, 5 received, 0% lost

What we be nice is an alternative to VM, A company that uses the same network but they install their own UBR's and manage them accordingly.

Yeah :/ Fibre is Fibre... cant really go wrong with it

Virgin are just idiots

20Mb line with xbox running and other PC uploading.

Beenw ith then about 4 years now, think my BB has gone down once for about an hour or so.
Only other small hiccup was when I moved home and they forgot the reassign me email boxes grr

speedtest.net sucks for me recently so i prefer to just use an ftp program and ftp.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk
UPLOAD
[19:03:14] Transferred 1 file totaling 675 KB in 10.38 seconds (89.5 KB/s)
DOWNLOAD
[19:06:35] Transferred 1 file totaling 5.16 MB in 3.13 seconds (2,226.5 KB/s)

acording to speedtest.net i was barely getting over 10mbit speeds

I'd be testing with files a lot larger than that. Small files can skew the results.

with an ftp? no they cant.... FTP speeds are always constant unlike downloads on port 80 from a webpage which can start at ridiculous speeds and then slow down to normal
anyway hopefully this is big enough for you

[12:12:17] Transferred: bf1942_mp_demo.exe 130.19 MB in 57.02 seconds (2,338.2 KB/s)
[12:12:17] Transfer queue completed
[12:12:17] Transferred 1 file totaling 130.19 MB in 57.20 seconds (2,338.2 KB/s)
faster than the 5.5mb one :)
this time downloaded from ftp.blueyonder.co.uk

edit have another [12:20:23] Transferred: wow-1.12.x-to-2.0.1-engb-patch.zip 697.96 MB in 5 minutes 6 seconds (2,330.3 KB/s)

I'd be off like a shot if I got 3.5Mb at nearly 2am on a 20Mb service.

This is the worst Speedtest.net result I've had since I joined:

They unbundled phoneline with LLU, why not cable?

Unfortunately we have a 12 month contract and it's not in my name. The only way we can contact VM is via mobile which also costs a fortune so there is no point ringing up, even if my other housemates cared that much.

What peeves me off is that we are getting the equivilent of 2 meg (generally if we are lucky) BB with freeview for about £30 a month, and none of the others seem to care...

contact technical support via the newsgroup they wont even ask if you are the account holder and if a tech comes out he wont care either.
news.virginmedia.com in group v.s.b.cable (doesnt need a password and if i remember right it doesnt need a username either they let you connect only if your on one of the virgin ip ranges)
you will need to know the username or account number though in order for them to know who you are.

username as in the original username they sent to your house when you registred something like your initials and a bunch of random numbers/letters that you use to login to the virginmedia website

The problem is it's not house specific, it's the whole area, and they know there is a problem. The only thing we can do is ask for a discount each month, but that takes effort...

Having said that today I managed to get 6-8Mb through speedtest and the internet seems to be reasonably responsive so maybe they have finally sorted it today! Or it's the snow, in which case it will die again in a couple of days.. :D

Damn you all!! I just ordered 50mb :D :p

Got TV & Phoneline included for just a tenner more though (£46) so not bad at all. Was paying £36 for just 20mb before & only 7 months through contract so am happy  £80 for installation is a b**ch though!

Come on the 18th!! :)

Er, FTP does the same on cable because that's how cable works...

The reason for using big files is to make the percentage uncertainty in the time smaller and to flatten out any fluctuation - if you think FTP's constant you're living in a dream world.

I think vm 20 mbs connection is good apart from web pages take an age to load but speeds on downloads are full 20mbs 24/7

After a night of seeding some files ran test @ 12:15

Ping seems a little high, also just noticed my suggested pyramid is no longer maidenhead.
Wonder what VM have been doing

VM (NTL/Telewest) have a thumbs up from me, never had any major problems with either my folks account (had cable internet for the last 7 years or, motorola surfboard days) or mine.

well i went into the virgin media brown box on the outside of my house and unscrewed the connection from the cable that runs underground and the cable that runs into my room and then cut the ends off and added my own f7 connector and used the algimating tape and tried my connection after and straight away web pages are loading so much faster and generally everything is flying. that says a lot for virgins workmanship
