Virgin media is pure awesomeness !!!

With other people downloading 700Gb a month, I'd not want to get back to your 20Mbit connection, the pings must be dire, and I imagine web-surfing must be sporadic at best..

:)

I get fantastic ping's certainly far better than all my mates on adsl/2 get, the downloaders do it over night, i pay for it so they use it when i say ;) so i notice nothing.

Must be lucky where i am, i found there service to be flawless in ever aspect, tv broadband, phone, there engineers are the same never had any problems and the 2 occasions i had to phone them( 1st was a knackered V+ box, they came out that day and replaced it, 2nd was a modem died and they came out the next day for that) i really can't complain about them, 10/10 for me in the 15 months i had them, best part in the deal i got i get 20 meg for £22 a month well pleased with that.

First you post innacurate information about the download limits on the 20Mb service and then you claim the caps are only lifted "in the middle of the night" when in fact it's from 9pm to 10am, which is over half the day!

That's not quite right either. The unmetered period is 9pm to 10am, but if you hit the STM at 20:59 you will stay STM'd for 5 hours - I found out as I miscalculated my usage when doing some Windows updates. I thought I had about 100Mb to spare but forgot my missus was watching iPlayer downstairs.

Either way, if you plan/manage your downloading a little the STM is no problems whatsoever.

My brother has 02 LLU, 20Mb (And syncs at that), it cost him £18 for the entire year, has no capping/no throttling, and no STM's, he always gets max throughput, and his pings never go over 40ms..

As with all these things, if you live in the perfect area, and have perfect mates and use the internet to the max perfectly, things are great.. If, like the majority of us, one or more aspects of out internet is not so perfect for reasons beyond out control we have to just put up with it!

I can't complain about Virgin Media's service either (50Mb service):

Perhaps you should do some reading up on the STM system before posting any more misleading "info"?

20MB = 3GB cap but whats 3GB .. I downloaded UT3 from steam that is 8GB the caps are just ridiulous. Apart from the Virgin Media are a good service they VERY rarely go down and when you are capped or not you speed in constant unlike my BT net which jumps from 3-5MB.

That a fantastic price for O2 for a year, i have a O2 contract and Be/O2 at the exchange its just the speed i would get a max of 10 meg or i be tempted will see what happens with vm.

Virgin suck! lol

Ive had to go with them since Ive moved to a new place that isnt really near an exchange.

Waited 2 weeks for an engineer to come plug in a modem since the house has already had a cable box before. I called Monday morning and confirmed the engineer was coming and to get a rough time that the engineer would make an appearance. I was told I was first on the engineers list of visits.

Waited at home till about 10:30 ish but there was no sign of him so I assumed he was running late because of the snow.

13:30 I get a phone call telling me the engineer didnt make it into work so he wouldnt be coming that day and then the visit was rescheduled a whole week later. We cant do anything about the weather but since the window of time for the visit was apparently 0900-1300, calling me at 13:30 to tell me the engineer wouldnt make it because people didnt make it into sounds a bit crap!

So... 3 weeks to get someone to flick a switch! woot

Regarding the Caps. I have been on 20mb service since the start and I have to download a hell of a lot more than 3GB for any cap to come into play. I download the DOW2 beta yesterday and TF2 and i seen no cap. Im not complaining though :D

How good is their 10mb connection? I am currently on Sky mid and moving house soon, and they have Virgin already cabled in so no point going for Sky (no dish either).

I don't really download that much, just the ocassional film and a few mp3s, would I get severe DL speed throttling? and if so does it go down to around a 3mb connection?

What kind of download speeds do people on 10mb get? My current Sky connection is around 5mb with a download of 500kbps.

Think that's 50Mb, not too sure. Either way, I'm in Newcastle, surrounded by student flats, so its likely got a few people using it. And aside for the odd occasion where it slows to a crawl, its great.

Edit: Woah, someone from Stratford! \^-^

I'd love to have Virgin Media's 50meg service but unfortunately their coverage is a bit like how mobile phones were in the early 90's :p

No 50mb in my area yet, last night my 20mb was on form, downloading at 2.35mb/s none stop, shame its not like that during peak times and weekends, but then thats when I use my O2 now so I'm happy.

that seems like its your fault to be fair? you must have selected for the engineer to come when ordering ?

when we ordered online we could choose to have the boxes, cables, instructions posted out or could choose for an engineer and a date for them

since we had seen the cable box on the wall where it comes through we choose delivery. all we had do do was run a coaxial cable from the wall and then plug a modem onto the end of it

dont see how you can call them crap when your only problem has been a total non problem :/

I didnt choose for an engineer to visit, I was never given the choice. I also spoke to a sales guy who apparently had no idea of their traffic management policies since I was giving him figures and he was under the impression there was none because he had it at home >.>

Sales guys are always clueless though so that doesnt really bother me.

What bothered me was the following:

1- When I called in the morning Im sure they had a clue that they didnt have a lot of their engineers in and yet they said nothing.

2- Called me after the time window to tell me that I wouldnt be getting a visit and then made me wait another week after Id already waited 2 weeks! I could have ordered a new BT line, had it fitted and had ADSL enabled in that time so Im not sure what the hard part in turning up with a modem is. I could have been sat there all morning waiting for an engineer to turn up ( luckily I didnt ). Im sure they must have realised that I wouldnt be getting a visit before 13:30 considering I was apparently first on the list.

Are you sure? When I asked BT to install a new phone line the earliest they could manage was 3 weeks after I ordered it!

Cable wins over ADSL. My 10Mb VM connection is excellent. Leaching P2Pers need to be restricted anyway.

Why only the leeching ones? You saying the ones that share and upload enough dont need restricting?

Why does cable win over adsl? >.< Feel free not to post any reasons for your comments eh!

whats the point in paying for 20mb or even anything above the minimum package if all you do is light surfing?

There is no point... but Im sure you could work that out yourself :P if you dont wanna download stuff fast then dont buy anything more than the minimum!
