Thatcher Barred

I know, its ridiculous, I have a lot of respect for her for not apologising.

its bloody crazy :/

i used to work with a bloke who looks like smithers from the simpsons, is it wrong that he was called smithers sometimes?
another bloke looked like tintin, was it wrong to say he did?

stupid people.

While we are on the subject of 'racism'.

Should I be offended when called an Itai?

Because it really doesn't offend me or my dad for that matter, or any of my Italian relatives come to think of it.
But how is it any different from calling somebody a "****"?

Why the racist uproar with that one?

A little OT I know but seeing this on the news today got me thinking.

Isn't Mark Thatcher (the other Thatcher child) part of the group that got busted for the alledged coup? Lol a selfish, "do what you want" attitude clearly runs through that entire family! :p

Yeah thats the man. The very same one that mummy made a multi-millionaire arms dealer as a middleman with somewhere between £10-20m of public money.

You also have to love the way that "PC" means anything a right winger doesn't agree with.

Because people don't just use the word '****' for pakistani people they use it (racistly) against all asians. A lot of my friends aren't pakistani but are asian and are offended if someone calls them this.

That's not the point. There's no historical stigma or hurt that can be resurrected by calling somebody Smithers or Tintin. It's not as simple as that and anybody that says otherwise, should know it. It's a derogatory term for all black people like the word "****" is for anybody that's brown.

At the end of the day it probably happens all the time, but when you have a public job you can't just go about and say what you want. Ron Atkinson learnt this, Glenn Hoddle did as well.

My work colleague told me yesterday that both she & her mother collect Golliwogs.
Her mum is Nigerian and she is Nigerian/Yorkshire.

something that I thought yesterday when it was on the news (again) is that the BBC have no problem displaying the word "golliwog" in all it's glory on the screen over and over again.

I think Carol Thatcher comes from a generation of people who grew up with golliwogs being part of their childhood. I'm not nearly as old as her, and my Gran made me a golliwog when I was little. I also had a book called "Little Black Sambo" but funnily enough, neither of these things made me racist or were read/played with using any racist connotations at all.

I think Carol Thatcher had a slip of the tongue. She said some tennis player's hair was like a golliwogs, and I think the whole thing has been blown out of proportion.

Incidentally, I can remember outrage when Robertson's Jam dropped the Golly marketing completely - from the black community.

Because they are trying to report factually and tell people what occurred.

Same as the broadsheets have no problem printing swearing, taboo and whatever other language was said on their front pages.

I get what you're saying, I was just thinking they wouldn't have done it if she'd said the 'n' word...

I'm sure that the comment was made but I read online that "no one took offence and her agent only heard about the complaint two days later". Then I read in the evening standard that both Jo Brand and another celeb had a "go" at Thatcher and then both with the crew stormed out of the green room.

I don't think I will believe anything other than the bare facts when I read about a case like this in future.

The slant you put on it makes all the difference on whether it was acceptable or not.

From what I can gather the company(social circle) she was in took offence....sounds a bit like the lad that mooned an official in a foreign country and got banged up for it, just need to watch your manners if you don't know your company...Miss Thatcher should have minded her P's and Q's.

Johnathen Ross did something 100 times worse, on air, and got a 3 month suspension. It just shows how ultra PC the BBC can be whilst being incredibly lenient with really offensive behaviour.

In all fairness, Ross was worth about a million times more.
