Why do people spell bought as brought?

how often do yo actually look for the the letters you type?

half the time i find my self writing a slightly different word because it;s what my fingers are used to doing :(

And for some god damn reason I can never hit the ' key only the ; :(

I hate keyboards :(

I think the term applicable here is 'proofreading.'

i dont see how simple errors make any difference its not like i am writing a novel its a response on a forum. As long as you can understand what a type thats all that matters.

Firstly, they're not simple errors, these are things that you either know or you don't. If you don't know, it's not a mistake, it's ignorance. Secondly, it's a lot harder to understand a post without punctuation and awful spelling, nevermind this stupid idea of replacing I with A.

Understanding it is not the only point. Some people have inherent standards, and there is no reason to lower it whether you are writing a report for work or a post in a forum. It's also about being considerate to other readers.

For example, your first sentence is made harder to read because you didn't use proper punctuation, and I had to read it twice to make sense out of it. This could have been easily avoided if yo had spent a split second adding a comma, semi-colon, etc.

Ignorance? So because I don't know which word to use in a sentence, I'm ignorant?

There is a difference between poor writing skills, and bad grammar. (As in the abbreviation of words etc)

Saying someone doesn't know how to spell correctly, because they can't be bothered to learn a certain word, is ignorance in itself.

THIS IS THE PROBLEM.

It's not dyslexia or a genuine learning difficulty, it is thick people who actually don't give a **** but are happy to have a go at anyone who points out their mistakes.

Earlier, someone posted something along the lines of "the question should be, who cares?"; the answer is, all those people who want to be able to communicate with the same language, not the bastardised version that someone just made up because they are thick and can't be arsed to learn.

There are a few genuine dyslexic members who use these forums and they tend to make more of an effort than the thick people who have found a plausible excuse for their incompetence.

No one expects perfection and most people here understand that the forums are for informal chat where one doesn't have to be an English graduate but the standard that some think is acceptable just shows them to be thoughtless plonkers.

, it's ignorance.

Ignorance is a strong word. I know how to use grammar i choose to be lazy when i am on forums.
My opinion is not gonna be changed easily. If its a particularly complicated subject i may make more of an effort tho.

What about when you read things where it says something like:

"Product A is better then Product B."

I've no idea who started this off but it seems to be a fairly recent (past 10 years) thing.

I've also read the odd BBC News article that suffers from this mistake. Which does make me worry about the quality of reporters/editors they are hiring these days.

I literally do not know the differences between two words sometimes...I'm gradually learning the differences yes, I never use 'bastardised' words to get my point across, I'll try to use the correct word.

If someone corrects me then fine, it's teaching me something at the end of the day...But if you can literally see someone cannot spell too well, sitting there practically taking the **** out of them is not going to help.

That just makes no sense at all...Because the words aren't even like each other in the slightest.

So it's either keyboard error, or someone using the wrong word entirely.

I've only really noticed this in the last month or so but half the people on here seem to be doing it. They're completely different words so I don't see how people can mix them up so often.

It's not a choice though, if you know how to write properly then it's not an effort. For example, it's not "lazy" to say "I would like to go their" if you know the difference between there/their/they're because you shouldn't even have to think about it.

Delvis - do you even know the definition of ignorance? Let me quote it for you: ignorance(noun) - lack of knowledge, understanding or information about something.
Some people have learning disorders, and even after trying to learn, they cannot remember how to spell certain words. Other people just don't try to learn, they are ignorant. If you don't know the difference between two words, look them up.

One problem is that when you try to correct someone or tell them how it is supposed to be they get all defensive. Are we supposed to let people use our language incorrectly these days?

I know I make mistakes and usually it is genuinely a slip of the keyboard but, spelling bought takes me nowhere near "R" after the b.

And if that person has learning difficulties/dyslexia/genuine problems with reading/writing, then... they shouldn't be allowed to use forums? Got to love the OCUK Compassion Crew©

I agree with this I can't spell well and have poor gramer not because I am stupid (the only A I didn't get in school was for English) they could never figure it out at school why I was getting 95-100% in every subject I did yet failing English and to this day I can still spell a word one week and then not able to spell it the next. It doesn't affect my job where I am always among the top performers so people should at least be a little more open minded before saying or assuming people are stupid if they can't spell.

In saying that I would never use brought instead of bought !

Fully aware of learning disorders, as my brother has a learning disorder.

And I no doubt have a small learning disability when it concerns spelling.

If that's how you meant it, then fair enough, just the way your post was written it came out a different way.

I don't have a problem with people with learning disorders, as I said before, they generally try harder to appear the same as everyone else. I'd put money on only a tiny percentage of the people who "can't spell" actually having learning disorders though.

True, there is not being able to spell...Then just spelling in 'internet' talk.

My brother always used to ask me to read through some of the thing's he had wrote, just to see if he made a few minor mistakes such as spelling words incorrectly, as he used to get certain letters mixed up.
