Snowboarding or Skiing ?

This makes you sound like a complete butter too. I can hit any kicker, lip, ridge you can, can ride backwards as well as I can ride forwards (and thus do the tricks required to change face on a whim), and we can certainly do more in a park, due to being able to move all four limbs independantly.

Snowboarding IS slow, you wouldn't keep up with me, that's for sure.

I said flats (as in flat piste)....... not ridges, kickers, lips blah blah blah. On the flat all you can do is ollie.....and er 180? I was very specific not to talk about jumps and park as skiers can do it all of course. On a flat you can do so much more on a board.

Also you sound very ignorant stating I couldn't keep up with you when you have no idea how I ride. Have you ever exceeded 100mph on skis? let alone 120mph?

What is a complete "butter"? Don't understand your cool speak.

By law, boarders now have to have the word "douchebag" displayed at least somewhere on their person. It's so that when they injure themselves by being irresponsible on the piste the paramedics can quickly identify who to help and who to ignore.

I prefer skiing if you hadn't noticed.

You have yet to provide an example of something that boarders can do on the flat that skiers can't:

ollie yes
manual yes
180 yes
360 yes
butters yes

...

Pick whichever you prefer best...

But please, can we keep Blades out of this thread. They look ridiculous and most people will laugh at you.

blades are the new trend in norway. and christ they go ****ing fast

obviously i am biased and would say board > ski, but it really depends on the person. i suggest you try both.

Sodding pole jockies :p

Skiing, though I would like to give boarding a try one day, but I dont want to waste a holiday learning when I could be on the piste skiing.

Did a level 1 ski lesson at Xscape last month and doing level 2 in a couple of weeks. Looking at the boarders doing their lessons at the same time, we were getting more runs in then them and we spent far less time on our arses.

well, i just got back from a week in Tignes on my board and I have decided that I would also like to learn to ski.

Reasons -

1. sometimes on the piste you just hit a flat patch and have to unstrap your binding and push

2. indoors, your getting maybe 1/2 to 2/3rds the runs that a skiier will do due to bindings

3. speed

4. I like a new challenge

Snowboarding is ace for tricks, indoors going kinda slow, style and fun. Skiing to me at least, looks more enjoyable on the real slopes.

How do u figure this? It looks waaay too easy to me to be any fun.. when a 4 year old can do something it cant be all that difficult to do .... snowboarding on the other hand is more of a challenge in my mind, it may be able to do better tricks, it may be faster, but from an outside view skiing just looks to simple, point urself down and go... snowboarding u have to work for it ;)

As was said above, snowboarding seems to be more about the "image" than the enjoyment. Although that seems to be changing too, as there seem to be less and less boarders these days.

Snowboarding is certainly not more about the image (though it seems you would like it to be), why would people bother spending so much time on their asses trying to get it if it was?

Snowboarding is incredibly rewarding, and very different to skiing. The mechanics are different and the ride is different. Yes there are downsides, such as flats, moguls and pomas (!) but I would happily take all of those because I love the experience that snowboarding offers.

I do not believe that anyone could argue the actual sensation of riding deep powder is better on skis than on a board, it's so different. For me it's just like surfing and is an amazing feeling.

But don't let me stop you making foolish comments. :)

p.s. jibbing is just not gonna happen on skis

Only ever done Snowboarding and loved it. But if your GF and son can only do skiing then the answers pretty obvious?

Your going to want to stick together, and you won't have to mess around clipping and unclipping one boot while your gf and son wait for you.

I went for the first time last month and I found off piste in the deep powder snow was the most enjoyable part of the holiday. It was brilliant.

I have never heard anyone describe snowboarding as to the be harder to learn than skiing before.

Yes its easier to actually get moving, but to be good takes much longer skiing.

Boarding takes a week max of two and you can do it. They its simple extensions of the basics ( I have not boarded but this is what I have been told from my friends who do it).

To be able to do similar tricks on skis say to what a boarder can do in the park is far more difficult and requires much more co-ordination.

I will stop there as to not turn this into a who's got a harder job of it.

I find that skiing is more enjoyable and all most of my friends prefer to ski, a minority still think you look cooler boarding and so hold on to that.

If I had the choice to start over again I would still pick skiing.

i'd take a poma over a t-bar any day! my local centre has t-bars and it's taking me weeks to find a position that doesn't make my front foot ache. the fact it's not got round edges ****s me off too

another issue is when you've got an uphill section in powder, and you just know you're never going to make it as you go slower and slower.. :(

I have that problem so much. I'm just casually carving down a slope, then I'll feel myself slowing down, then I'll just stop in the middle and end up looking like an idiot while I jump up and down trying to go somewhere. Saying that, I've got a new board now which is meant to be awesome on powder, I just haven't had a chance to try it.

How much was your board? Im wondering whether I should invest in getting kitted out rather than spending £120 everytime I go to hire board and boots.

£120 seems a bit much, I got 12 days hire for a Burton board/bindings and Salomon boots for £70.

I would put aside about £350-£500 for boots/bindings and board if buying new basic to intermediate stuff...

which board did you get?

i got a burton duece, which is good enough for me as i only just started. you should be able to get one for around £250
bindings will be another £150ish and boots the same, unless you go for more advanced stuff and want to pay the extra..

if you go often, it's much better have your own stuff and not having to pay to rent gear.
