Vauxhall Meriva - review

87bhp from a 1.6 sounds quite low. I thought most modern engines of that size should be capable of at least 100bhp? Did Vauxhall dig it out of the ground or something?

Was going to say the same and have been beaten twice. My parents had the same engine in both Zafiras they had and also an Astra they have owned. I suppose its reasonable for the Meriva but it just didnt cut it in the Astra and in the Zafira it was utterly hopeless. Had the missfortune of taking the Zafira down to both Lakeside & Bluewater via the M25 and I can honestly say it just had nothing to give at any sign of a hill, foot down and nothing happened.

That is very poor power for the size engine. My Puma 1.7 had 123bhp and the Fiesta 1.6 is only a bit less at 120bhp.

You'll have annoyed the deluded Vauxhall Defence Force members now though so watch the thread turn sour when they ride on a wave of tedious crap to defend the beautiful marque.

LOL.. get out of bed the wrong side or what?

I think the 'defence forces' would only have sprung into action if the OP tried to make out the Ford Fusion was twenty times better in comparison.. then perhaps the 'common sense' brigade may have popped in to point out how crap they both are.. :)

I can safely say that of all the hire cars, the most hated by far is the Meriva's... It's not the drive/quality etc (which is bad enough), but people just don't want to be seen in them at all..

But look on the good side, it only makes you appreciate your own car more when you get back in it!

also, the op said that the car had to be 1.4 or 1.6. name a car with that displacement which fulfills your requirements that can be had from a rental company

A couple of cars are getting 150bhp+ out of 1.4's now (with the help of a turbo) all pretty cheap and could be rental cars.

well yes i know that, but my point is that none of them will be rentals.
no 1.4 and 1.6 turbo cars will be available from hertz/avis, etc

I had a meriva hire car, it grew on me like an old pet dog :)

Itr stank, crapped everywhere and you secretly couldn't wait for it to die so you could get something new and exciting again?

I had to suffer an Astra MK3 with a 60bhp 1.4 for several years. That was like driving around in AIDS.

I've always found vauxhauls to be quite nippy, especially when compared to Fords of similar displacement.
Maybe its because you subconsciously rag them more, i dunno.

My Mum drives one of these, the only positive point I've found is my Grandma can get in and out easily after a double hip replacement.

Ding ding ding ding. We have a winner.

That is the type of person this car is aimed at. For people who are going to die in the next couple of years.

Not at all. It is crap :)

Take a car you were never likely to enjoy and was completely the wrong car for the job, write a review with a few clever Clarkeson-esque words and phrases, then sit back at wait for OcUK to praise you.

I mean seriously, you not liking this car is no surprise. The car isn't aimed at someone like you. It's like me being given a tractor for my commute to work and then being surprised when it was rubbish and completely unsuitable.
