The *Official* Eve Online Thread

Just been playing about with the new scan probe system on the test server. Its really nice and pretty easy to understand if you think about triangulation (quadulation ) in three dimensional space.

The probes only give you a range to a target not the direction so you get results like this:

1 Probe, will just give you a range sphear, the thing you are looking for is somewhere inside it.

2 Probes, the probes work together to give you all the possible places the ship/anomaly you are looking for could be given the range results from both probes. It gives you a circle, your target is somewhere along the red line.

3 Probes, with the third probe online and providing its range it pins it down but gives you a mirror image of the target. Which if you think about it is exactly what should happen.

4 Probes, with the 4th probe giving its range you can finaly pinpoint the exact location of the target. Its better to put the 4th probe above or below the target but I didnt in this screeny.

Bugs :

Directional Scanner is now broke, or they changed how it works.
Solar system map is now always zoomed in for somereason.
Stupid big arrows to move the probes. Clumsy way to move your probes around system, most of your time is wasted fighting these things and there are such better ways to do it (How it was done in the Homeworld games for example).

I always kind of feel that CCP have made some sort of policy decision not to use homeworld's movement system, since it's hard to explain by any other means- it works so well... Sometimes companies get obsessed with going their own way even though it means settling for a less good option.

I cant second you enough on that point, HW even to this day quite simply has one of if not the best 3D movement methods.

Well, left the battleship in dock and went helping amate do some level 1 missions.. picked up a frig called a punisher, lovely ship.... best fun ive had in ages!

Yeah Colin, that Amarr Frig is a nice ship, im currently flying around in a Magnate for Exploration in hi sec (gives scan time bonus). Flying around in Barges and Exhumers for the last 2-3 months I had forgotten what a nice ship looks like.

Could have cried/laughed last night though, first outing doing some exploration, bought all the items i needed and trained my skills up a bit. Went looking for a Grav spot and yeah, found one, or at least I though I did, being distracted by the kidds and I missread a Mag for a Grav ;( spent All Afternoon and Evening tracking down the wrong type of site with the wrong type of probe ;) lmfao.

Wont make that mistake again ;)

What made it worse is that my skills wouldent allow me to use Sift probes so it took 4 lots of Persuit Probes to lock the site down ;)

Yeah, I love Exploration. typical that the system is now changing ;)

Punisher is great. This is also why the Amarr assault frigs rock, because they are based on the punisher :)

got it setup in a way i like, decided to go play with it and see if i could get a good setup. so far its carrying 2 nos, 2 tech 2 pulse, shield charger, hull repairer, armour repairer, nano plate, and other low slot boring bits for cap amount increase..

So far its a crazy killing machine. Not took on real ppl yet, only rats, but went solo V 4 caldari cruisers, had the two nos going [knave i think they are] both guns blazing away and the shield charger on.... handled all 4.... what a ship!!!

now looking at the retribution :) tech two version of the punisher, problem is, is it worth buying it as soon my mate will be in cruisers and battleships doing lvl 3/4's and no way im taking a frig into lvl 4's lol...

Still, the game amazes me now and again with little things like this..

Tried a set up with a smart bomb once, lol.... great for the rogue drone missions :)

small tip - hull reps are worthless for in-fight repairing. you will probably find that your fits are more cohesive if you try to amour OR shield tank, not both :)

Well, yes, all 3! i got fed up having to go back into a station to fit the bloody things i left them on the ship as i tend to lose the shield fast, then the armour, all 1200 of it goes and soon i get to see nice fires on the ship....

and to be honest, i cant find anything else to fit on it lol.. maybe some hardners but i dont have the cpu for them....

hehe... im tempted to go find a loadout, but hey, its fun and its lasting the fights :)

i have thought of taking the hull repairer off, but replace with what???maybe i need to look around at more gear, but that lack of CPU is killing me...

ColiN - aye, im a noobie :)

Generally you choose to either tank shields or armour, with a proper fit they should last out the fight - armour tanking would be something like cap power relay, armour plating / active or passive hardeners and armour repairer in the low slots, afterburner, cap recharger + whatever in the mids, and then your guns.

Generally, lots of capacitor recharging stuff plus lots of stuff to bring up your armour resists as much as possible.
