some people don't get the mini and why people bother maintaining the rust buckets.. its not a modern car that you have low maintenance on those you buy to be reliable (a runabout) people buy these cars because they enjoy getting there hands dirty (petrol heads) each to there own tbh and even modern cars can be **** and bust often we have had plenty dads bmw after 20k miles had a engine rebuild and new gear box ricently after 50k-ish i think allways stuff going wrong on it and the merc sprinter new van has had a clutch and fly in it allready, then there is my runabout clio 04 has coil packs and other daft stuff done allready you cant get away from spending on cars of any age tbh...

whats 'pathetic' about it?

its a hobby car not a mondeo.

They are ok cars for having as a weekend project, or as a new driver as they are cheaper to insure. They are also very easy to find parts for and to add modifications to. Also they are an iconic car, so why shouldnt they be on the road :)

Unless of course you are talking about the BMW minis... in which case they have no purpose on the roads today

about the Bini as i call it lol i would disagree sure people who love the classic dislike the bmw attempt but if it had been released as rover not bmw im sure the reactions would have been a lot more positive its a fresh update of a classic that wont rust or require much maintenance i actually like the cooper S (don't like the clubman or the new Turbo shape its FAT) and in our club a lad has a tuned mini he works for robert-shaw racing he tests the new kit on his before they use it and it just looks Sweet for a bini its lower than a classic somehow camber is practically making the wheels fall in over xD and don't look so girly like the standard 1

What? It's a drivers car and a total hoot to drive at it. So what if it's been surpassed by technology, simple fun doesn't get much better than this.

I think that they are hilarious to drive, more fun at lower speeds than anything I've driven.

So what do they do better than say a 106 rallye? or a 205 xs? Both are very basic cars than can be fettled with by an enthusiast, good to drive, more comfortable and reliable than a mini, more refined:p and they don't fall apart at the sight of a puddle.

well the fact in another 10 years the mini will still be loved for its styling they turn heads make people luagh/smile as you go past allways will have that appeal over the likes of the 106-205 ect

but like i said at the start i lost interest in my mini project a year ago it was my first car and i had a LOT of fun with it on the road and off messing with it i didn't carry out all the mods because they where necissary to keep it working i did it because i wanted to theres a differance it would have lasted a few years before the bodywork got really bad... but you can't expect to buy 1 of these and keep your wallet shut lol they allways need maintenance its only fun when jobs go right at the time you think why do i bother ;)

I dont think some people on this forum realise that some people like certain cars which are constantly being classed as "crap" or "old shed". Personally, i like minis, hell i got a MK2 XR2 which some people class as sheds. But i love it, i love working on it, hell thats half the fun and i love driving it. And lets be honest a 106 isnt exactly miles away from a mini. They are not the best cars about are they. I think some people should just accept that people like older cars and enjoy working on them. Not come into a thread call it a shed and say he is not having fun while working on it.. Meh... Anyways, feel free to flame away at me :)

You don't understand whats unacceptable about cars as recent as 1996-2000 requiring major rebuilds like that?

Besides, if they enjoy doing it, great, but it stops being simple fun.

depends on what you consider fun. i rebuilt the engine and front end on my 96 cooper, not far off a big lego set.

its daft to compare such a hobby car to a normal car from 96, its perfectly acceptable for a n reg mini to have a rebuild give s you a chance to do whatever you want to do with them.

you simply dont understand.

Predictable.

On those grounds a 106 and a 205 are better cars than my Anglia but I know which one I'd rather have.

A Mini drives like a cross between go-kart and a dodgem. If you've ever driven one you'd know what I mean. I don't think anything comes close, 106's definitely don't.

Why, in 1996 was the Mini Sidewalk sold from the showroom as a 'hobby car'?
No, but people knew they were buying a 30 year old design ;)

And yes, they weren't bought with 100% practicality in mind.

the swift conversions usually do produce 120ish bhp the engine standard might not but the kits out there do :) and the re-bore option ,head, cam, pistons ect gets you about the same bhp im a bit rusty with the stats it might be a bit less but i'v seen many amounts of uprated blocks and conversions makes the mini fast as fcuk down the strip or on a track...

They dont i can assure you.

a lot more is involved in produceing 120bhp form an a-series.

My 1293 produces 118 bhp. i can list everything that has been done to it if you wish.

Predictable.

Yes, but your Anglia wasn't in production along side much superior cars in it's class up until 2000.

I've driven 3 minis, 2 1 litre ones and a cooper. They were all, well a bit tedious. My 106 Rallye (And this is where I get accused of being a fanboy ;)) which I had at the time I drove the minis was much, much better in this respect.

I think your pathetic fox, like the rest an identical clone without knowledge of motoring history or the common mis conceptions of the motoring world. The mini is a car that doesn’t need constant repairs and rebuilds if its treated correctly with proper care.

As far as building up a shell goes. I’m building one. I know ill be able to lap cadwell park quicker then that bmw in your sig. Even Snetterton ill still beat you with lots of its open bends where a longer wheel base car has an advantage.

The thing about a mini it comes in at 680kg and that’s a late mpi so heavy as anything.

Mine will be sat at around 500kg. With that car this fella is building put a rear beam on it and its 600kg at most with the 120bhp hes planning that’s 200bhp per tonne. That makes for one seriously fast road mini that will surprise allot of bmw drivers.

(i know because i sit them down most mornings in the rush hour.)

Mines going to be in excess of 300/tonne.

Next you will moan about them being harsh and noisy.

If I wanted comfort I would go sit in my front lounge.

Personal insults aren’t tolerated apparently however you seem to get away with it fox.

1330 or 14..cc will produce 120odd if yours is 1293 producing that.. you will have a lot of good parts in yours then = )
