One-armed TV presenter 'scaring kids'

thats a pretty selfish point of view. I suppose you are against the smoking ban in public closed spaces? Also there are a lot more smokers than there are people that should put gloves on their handless arms.

As far as I am aware you can't catch cancer from second hand amputee-ism...

You really need a better analogy. :D

Eh? I agree with the other guy and you sir are stupid. How can you bring smoking into the argument?! Smoking in a public closed space affects others around you, having an uncovered arm won't kill you! How is it selfish for her to not want to wear a glove for something she can't help? It's selfish of people like you to expect her to be an outcast and dress differently

I guess you could say she has single handedly scared at least 3 people

:o

But on a serious point, it IS the parents who actually are scared NOT the Children! Children will of course ask their parents about it and I think it's then the point gets lost.

I'm disabled and both my nieces (14, 18) grew up knowing me and don't see me as disabled just another annoying Uncle!

The more exposure to children of different races, cultures and disabilities the better. If only the parents could explain it better too them.

I find adults can and do treat me different when at work etc, my nieces friends may be a bit shy around me but soon move on from that awkward moment but adults find it more difficult to do so.

Maybe you could wear boxing gloves when at the PC so we don't have to read your ugly comments.

:D

I can't believe people complained over this. Children need to learn about disabilities sooner or later. If this woman can do her job, which apparently she can do well, then there is no issue. I can't imagine the arguments put forward by these 9 pedantic souls to the BBC.

'I'm not prejudice but...'

Are you suggesting that not being able to smoke is akin to having to cover up a missing limb?

Really?

This is about appearances. Her appearance doesn't harm anyone. If it shocks people, they'll get used to it. They SHOULD get used to it. Society should work towards getting rid of revulsion that people feel for those who look different, which is based on not seeing people as people. The very best way to do this is exposure. Making herself cover herself up because she might 'offend people' would achieve nothing save telling her yet again that she is abnormal, different and not wanted.

this makes me laugh, parents quite openly let their children watch shows/movies way over thier age limit, or play games over thier age limit, yet a 1 armed woman scares them and is worth the time and effort to complain about?

LOL at the priorities of some parents.

I saw her presenting the other day, my 2 9 year old sisters were watching and my 4 year old brother. I was a little shocked for a couple of seconds, only because its not what you expect to see. But they didnt seem to care, i asked them what they thought and they just seemed to express sorrow for her, but nothing remotely suggesting it had freaked them out.

I think its a good thing that shes on there, it shows that anyone can achieve anything they want, without fitting standards. Although they probably didnt see it like that, it at least makes them feel less shock/confusion when it comes to seeing disabled people around and lets them know that they are as normal as anyone else.

You heard about this because it was in the news: lots of parents complain about the other stuff, but that doesn't make a story that people want to read. These are a few parents with messed up priorities saying something stupid about a slightly controversial topic, which the media knows will stimulate conversations like this which will get people to buy their papers and click their links! The media is not impartial, it prints what the people want, while simultaneously influencing what we want.

Okay.. i just mentioned it to one of my sisters and she said she has since had a nightmare about the woman losing her arm. O.o

She should do her research about how she was born with it like that - then proceed to have her nightmare :p

Yes at 9. To achieve as such she needed to predict it was going to cause her to have a nightmare then do some research into the womans life so her nightmare could accurately represent her stuggles through childhood like that, rather than losing it.

When was the last time you had nightmares in such accurate detail? :p
