Darkfall - Jan 22nd (maybe...)

I'm still going to give it a try, it sounded so promising and even if it doesnt deliver it all straight away it should have potential.

Yes it did sound promising. Now it doesnt.

Its not just a few features missing here and there, it's loads of them. They've taken 8 years thus far to bring out a half finished game, how long do yuo think it's going to take them to add in the missing content and fix the masses of bugs/exploits in the system? The first 6 months of any MMO is crucial, IMO there's no way in hell that aventurine will get their act together in that time.

Right now the game is absolutely horrible.

Exactly - for the first few months they'll be doing nothing but firefighting the bugs and load issues that are only cropping up now because they've never done a serious (or any) stress test before launch.

If it survives that it might be worth a look in a few months.

what I cant understand is people are actually going to pay to play this lol ;-)

I can't understand how you can't understand people paying for darkfall, if it appeals to them then happy happy joy joy.

I've pre ordered it :D.

btw the Torrent is damn slow, some people reporting they're getting 750kb/s and I'm only getting 30kb/s.

The entire thing came down overnight for me, can't complain there.

The pre-ordering mess is a complete farce though. WAR had issues for the beta in Europe, but at least there wern't any problems buying the proper game.

Finally managed to get my CC details saved in the early hours (been trying since i got my account activated on day1), and performance was decent, but the shop was still "temporarily offline". Now the entire accounts site is 404'ing again.

Gave up last night as i couldn't get any pages to work, it appears so many other people managed OK that they "ran out" of pre-orders though. New bit on the news sections says:

We'll make more copies available on launch day, but if these happen to sell out as well, we'll offer copies as often as possible as we keep upgrading our capacity. As much as we would like to be able to handle all the demand, it's very difficult when this constantly increases. We’re working as fast as we can to catch up, but for now our #1 concern is that the people who do get into the game are able to have a good experience. We’re afraid that we need to control the number of players for now. On the other hand we are aggressively working on being able to meet the demand.

How can they possibly sell out of digital copies! Have they not done any capacity planning / forecasting. What a bloody joke. I can see Wednesday being another day of refreshing and sql errors until they they "run out" again.

It is such a shame. I was looking forward to this. Seemed a bit of a UO like game. Its similar in a few ways but from what I have read its not great.

Plus with all this palaver of not being able to pre-order and 40odd quid for a digital copy. Just all seems a bit well bodged together at the last min just to ship some sales when they are really not ready.
Having said that they have had a good couple of years to pre-pare for this so its hardly like they havnt had the time.

I think I will wait a month or two before deciding if i want to buy it or not. It will also show if the game will have any kind of life to it or not.

The thing it, they're and indie company who've been running on an extremely tight budget. They've been pushed hard to get the game in an enjoyable, playable state for the 25th but are severely low on funds right now. Releasing an unfinished yet enjoyable game now means they can start bringing in revenue to help upgrade the capacity.

You have to realise that they're not another Blizzard or Codemasters and that they rely on us to support them and help them to improve the game through our willingness to subscribe to something that we don't know much about.

The actual game itself is very well coded and is more complete than most games at release. The client stability is second to none.

Yea I know they are not the size of blizz and codemasters thats a pretty given fact tbh.....

Yes they are an indie company that still does not mean they should be reviewed in such a way. End of the day they are a small fish in a big pond they need to prove themselves if they want to suceed.
I havnt played the game I am not going to pretend that I have either. All I can go by is from what I have read about the game. Orginally I was all up for pre-ordering it. But I cannot even pre-order the game they are trying to sell. Just seems to be quite a lack of prepartion from there end to be honest.

Anyways time will tell.

I think the fact that theyre small means a good launch is absoutely critical to the games longevity and this is not a good sign. Taking another mmog as an example, WWIIOL had huge hype before launch, lots of people bought the box. On the actual launch day it was a nightmare and only a couple of percent of players went on to pay the monthly fee. The game struggled to survive and it was only because it was very much a niche market being both an FPS MMOG and a tank/plane simulator with ultra realistic damage models that a select couple of hundred grognards kept the game ticking over until it became playable. And some would say theyre not there yet, many years later.

I cant see any reason why they cant get investment in darkfall which would let the development process continue for a couple more months, theres more than enough expectation in large sections of the gaming community - it just seems theyre very unwilling to let go of a chunk of their intellectual property in exchange. But its so clear that they are unready, and blaming 'ISP's in america having problems' and 'running out of digital downloads' cant hide the fact that they are seriously out of their depth in a relatively basic area, getting the client out there in exchange for a large wad of cash.

I hope hope hope im wrong, but the way i see this going, as has happened many times, is the hype means a massive influx on launch day, server lag and wholesale crashes to start with until some sort of stable client is established, then bugs and exploitation to the nines till a number of patches have been brought out. possibly a world reset. The forums are a screaming mass of discontent, the first reviews pan the game sideways and a large chunk of the players go back to the games they actually had fun in.

Fingers crossed, the game will survive for a while on all the digital download sales, and left with only the dedicated might actually be quite an interesting proposition at this point. Youre looking at april anyway.
