Tyres

No, but they were fitted in pairs and they have even wear. You can't guarantee how those part worms have been treated and if they have even wear and tread pattern. Don't make such a silly remark.

But you can guarantee how your car was treated before you bought it and know its never been kerbed or had a puncture repaired dont you!?

You can actually view the tyres before you get them fitted to the car...... the garage will show you the makes and wear on the tyres and usually let you pick which you want.

Say you get a puncture in one tyre which isnt repairable. The other tyre has 4.5mm left on it. They are £150 new but the garage say you can have a "part worn" one of the same brand/model for £40 which has 4.5mm tread on it.

Do you buy the part worn, or do you shell out to have two new tyres are £300. I would buy the part worn one, and I imagine a great many other people would do provided the tyre is itself completely fine which they are supplying.

Probably not but at least they are in identical pairs and are the right size for the car, they haven't been kerbed because the wheels are in perfect condition and the side walls aren't scuffed. Anyway, when changing tyres what do you do?

I'd get the part worn because it has the same amount of tread and it's the same tyre size. The OP wants to get a set of part worns for the whole car in the wrong size and i doubt they'll find matching pairs.

Ordered 4 indentical tyres off the internet, and im letting the main dealer fit them for me.

STRIKE ME DOWN I have in the past bought part worn tyres because it made sense to.

The garage advised me they are 4 of the same tyres.

So have I, for my old Escort. I'm just stating my preference, when buying new tyres for my car, they should be new. If it's a puncture then it's different.

Are they the correct fitment for your car though?

Seems how there is a differing of opinion.. i posted this on another forum

you will get away with the 195/65/14 will be ok
Yep, '195' refers to the width of the tyre, 10mm difference is nothing

They aren't the same as what is on there now, as I said in the op.

And for the person who wanted to know what car, its only an L reg mondeo mk1

Well the other forum guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

See here, enter your old and new sizes. You'll be running 2.2% out, and the speedo will be that percentage slow.

And is that going to cause any other problems? If its just that the speedo will be a bit out then thats fine

At the end of the day, the car was £200 so unless its going to be dangerous (apart from the fact that they arent new so you dont know whats happened) i'll just go for the part worns

Surely if part worns were that bad they would be illegal for garages to sell?

If you can't afford £200 on a set of new tyres, you cannot afford the car and you are a ***** for pretending you can. What would you do if your discs and pads needed doing all round, buy second hand? £200 for a set of tyres is dirt cheap. I suppose the other thing you could look at would be a set of 2nd hand alloys for £100-£150 with nearly new tyres, in that size that should be achievable.

Seriously, if you cannot afford enough to maintain your car, sell it and get over yourself.

Part worn tyres - you don't have a clue what has happened to them in the past - hey why not get remoulds instead? That would be nice!

I used part worns on my old Renault 19 for a number of years, never had a problem with them to be honest. £20 a corner, helped keep costs down.

Erm wtf! fancy crawling out of yourself for a minute to look at what your actually saying? How is a second hand pair of alloys and better than part worn tyres? They are both used, 2nd hand tyres.

I've never bought part worn tyres.

However, for all the people bleating on about how it's so dangerous and lethal and shouldn't be considered for even a second - get over yourselves! Part worn tyres are just that - partially worn. When you buy a second hand car it comes with 4 of them. And guess what, terrible things could have happened to those tyres too! Just because they are all currently on the same vehicle means zilch.

Arf arf! I've heard it all now... don't buy 4 part worn tyres, but go ahead and buy 4 replacement wheels which also have part-worn tyres! Do people think about this sort of thing before they post it or what? What real guarantees have you got buying 4 part worn tyres mounted on a wheel compared to 4 part worn alloys not mounted on rims? About the only thing I can think of is that the ones on rims are less likely to have been crashed into a kerb, but if you do that hard enough to damage a wheel it's likely to leave evidence on the tyre as well.

£200 for 4 tyres might well be "zilch" to some people, to others it's not, it's certainly a lot more than £60 for 4 tyres isn't it?

A[L]C, I can't remember if the stock Mondeo steel will take 195's, should be okay but you might get a touch more sidewall bulge, nothing to write home about.
Speedo error of 2.2% is negligable.
I don't think the stock Mondeo wheel has any clearance issues on the inside (some cars run the wheel very close to the damper which causes issues if you raise the size - I don't recall the Mondeo being one of them as the 6J wheel you can get for the Mondeo is the same offset as the standard wheel IIRC)
In fact, I might well have had 195's on mine, I don't remember now.

I find it interesting that you are so against part worn tyres, you realise that they will come pressure tested and may mean he can afford premium tyres rather than no-name new ones? I would much rather someone drives around on 5mm tested goodyears than a pair of brand new linglongs for example.

People on this forum especially are into their very cheap motors (including yourself iirc?) which will all have come with used tyres on them, i bet most people do not replace them as soon as they take ownership.

You guys really up yourselves arent you. I already knew fox was but I didnt realise he had infected others!

The fact that I cant afford brand new tyres at the moment and need something to tie me over doesnt mean im a *****. Its better than running around on slicks.

It was a simple question which need either a 'Yes it will be fine as long as its on all 4 wheels, but its not ideal' or 'No they're talking rubbish it will be dangerous/will not fit'

You're wasting your money on part worns. I don't see why you can't just accept it's a bad idea.

Depends how worn and how cheap, but as some have said including yourself anything is better than slicks.

p.s.

Have you actually used public transport? If it was economically viable, then I would be happy to use the bus.

A bus megarider is £10 a week, i buy one to get to work as its cheap and just as fast in the traffic, no shame, but if your struggling to run a cheap to run car do the sensible option.
